The day's biggest surprise was Caroline Wöstmann's win the women's race — the first by a South African since 2001. She improved 70 minutes on her 2014 time. Wöstmann inched her way to the front of the pack until she finally passed Podnebesnova, who had maintained a strong lead until that point, in the final 5km.
Stephen Mokoka successfully defended his Half Marathon title in a sprint finish. The Phalula twins dominated the women's race, with Lebogang winning and her sister Diana (defending her 2014 title) finishing third.
Title Sponsor Old Mutual had originally offered a million-grand prize to anyone breaking the 56km records, but the times set in 1988–89 remain in place for another year.
