PALMERSTON NORTH Athletics New Zealand Long Distance Road Walk Championships, Centennial Drive – 21 October 2012
Graeme Jones of Napier retained his New Zealand 50km title in 5h 11m 58s. In far from ideal conditions, heavy cold showers during the first half and then a strong westerly wind, Jones was 25m 21s slower than his winning time last year. Mike Parker (59) was second in 5h 32m 52s, 37 years after competing in his first 50km championship in 1975 when he was third in 4h 56m 19s behind Norman Read and Morrie Hinton.

Peter Zwart, chairman of the LOC for the event, was third in 5h 48m 5s. Other title holders were Matthew Holcroft M19 20km 1h 44m 44s, Jonathan Lord M16 10km 53m 23s, Roseanne Robinson women 15km 1h 23m 14s, Courtney Ruske W19 15km 1h 29m 21s, Emma Dunbar W16 10km 1h 11m 35s, Theresa Large MW55-60 20km 2h 23m 13s and Susan Hoskin MW 60-64 20km 2h 13m 9s.

AUCKLAND
Auckland Centre Meeting, Mt Smart Stadium – 20 October 2012

Siositina Hakeai, fourth at the world junior championships in Barcelona in July, has started the season with some fine throws in the discus, reaching out to 55.13m on Saturday. During the week at Mt Smart she was also over 55 metres throwing 55.63m at the Auckland City Club meeting.

The 18 year old student at Auckland Girls Grammar School set a New Zealand W18 record of 56.17m in Barcelona. She has her sights set on Beatrice Faumuina’s national W19 record of 57.94m and hopes to eclipse the New Zealand secondary schools record of 52.02m in Dunedin in early December.

Sixteen year old Sam Ulufonua also showed good early season form in the M18 shot put with 16.50m and in the discus with 52.82m. Phillip Wyatt was out to 13.88m (+1.0) in the triple jump and covered the 100m in 11.54s (+2.5), Zoe Ballantyne won the sprint double, 12.61s (+3.2) and 25.49s (+4.0) and 15 year old Megan Kikuchi shone in the 400m running close to her personal best in 57.91s. Elizabeth Lamb won the 100m hurdles in 15.07s (+3.0) and Amelia Fraser W18 triple jump 11.00m (+3.7) also 10.88m (+1.1).

Auckland City Athletics, Mt Smart Stadium – 17 October 2012
Jono Jackson 1000m 2m 40.85s. Ben Moynihan 5000m 16m 7.37s, Jackson 16m 7.59s. Siositina Hakeai discus throw 55.63m. Ryan Howe long jump 7.04m (+2.0).

CHRISTCHURCH
Canterbury Centre Meeting, Rawhiti Domain – 20 October 2012

Rebecca Hodgson, third in the New Zealand W20 hammer throw championship last March, was out to 50.03m with the hammer on Saturday. Hodgson holds the Canterbury W19 record of 50.12m. Erica Winton (16) cleared 1.70m in the high jump. Thomas Martin won the 100m in 11.66s (-0.7) and David Elliott the 200m in 23.74s (+1.8). Jesse Bryant and Dean van der Busse were both over the high jump at 1.95m. Pip Trevella recorded 4m 50.55s in the 1500m and Ben Musson ran the 3000m in 9m 17.14s. Ben Meikle won the 2000m walk in 12m 28.96s.

DUNEDIN
Otago Centre Meeting, Caledonian Stadium – 20 October 2012

Larissa Dyke won the 100m in 12.85s (-2.5). In the 1500m Anthony Trainor M18 recorded 4m 15.64s, Ben Anderson SM 4m 10.69s, Sian English W15 4m 53.44s and Caitlin O’Brien W18 4m 53.24s. Stephen Isaac won the M20 200m in 22.98s. Felix McDonald (B14) 200m in 25.26s (-0.5) and 400m 57.18s. Gavin Stark M17 400m in 52.81s and Shauna Pali (19) 5000m 18m 32.30s.

Wild weather meant no electronic timing or wind readings for the second week in a row – highlights: 100m Deejay Kennedy (SM) 11.0s; Gavin Stark (M17)11.2s; 200m Kennedy 23.3s; 3000m Jordan Rackham (M17) 9m 31.9s; long jump Greer Alsop (W20) 5.24m, Todd Swanson (SM) 6.13m; discus Chris Knight (SM) 37.01m.

CHIBA EKIDEN RELAY TEAM ANNOUNCED
The New Zealand team to compete in the Chiba Ekiden Relay in Japan on 23 November over the 42.195km marathon distance is: Zane Robertson, Danielle Ingram-Trevis, Jake Robertson, Camille Buscomb, Tim Hodge, Sarah Drought. Travelling reserves Hugo Beamish, Rachel Kingsford. Manager Graham Tattersall. Coach Geoff Shaw.

PAPAKURA CLUB’S 75TH JUBILEE
The Papakura Athletics and Harrier Club will celebrate their 75th Jubilee on Saturday 10 November 2012. There will be a full day of track and field competition at Massey Park on 10 November starting at 10am with the Ron Keat Junior Athletic Day followed by an “Imperial” hot meeting for senior athletes at 3pm, with events run over the imperial distances, used up to 1969, as a tribute to the past, as well as the metric distances that have been used since 1970.

In the evening a Jubilee Gala Dinner will be held at the Massey Park function room. Tickets to the dinner are limited to 100 seats and cost $50.

The Club was founded in January 1937 by Frank Osborne at Prince Edward Park Papakura in January 1937. The Club competed at Prince Edward Park up to April 1957 when they transferred and set up their headquarters at Massey Park. In 1989 an all weather track was laid at Massey Park. Ron Keat was the driving force behind the Club over four decades from 1950 through to 1986. Ron Keat was captain of the Auckland centre team and took the oath at the opening ceremony at the New Zealand championships at Eden Park Auckland in March 1947. In 1987 as a fitting tribute to Ron the street that Massey Park is in, Railway Street East, was renamed Ron Keat Drive.

Among the members who have won New Zealand titles have been Wally Heron five times pole vault and fourth at the 1950 Empire Games; Bevan Hough three times long jump and silver medal at the 1950 Empire Games; Murray Jeffries four time high jump; Olympian Chantal Brunner 17 national titles, nine long jump, six 100m and two 200m and Olympian Kimberley Smith three times 5000m and once 1500m. Other notable members have been Helen Nicholson five times Auckland discus throw champion was sixth in the discus throw as Helen Thayer at the 1962 Perth Commonwealth Games and All Black Kieran Read who still holds the Club record for boys 7 long jump.

OBITUARIES
Athletics Canterbury and University of Canterbury Athletic Club stalwart Frank Nolan died in London early Tuesday morning. Frank aged in his late 50’s went for a run on Saturday 6 October and suffered a massive heart attack which he never recovered from. The previous Saturday he and two other members of Queens Park Harriers had won third place veterans team medals in Middlesex 10km road championships, Frank finished 142nd in 46m 49s.

Frank’s wife is former New Zealand long distance running champion Mary O’Connor, who competed in the marathon at the 1983 world championships in Helsinki, the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and the 1986 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games.

Frank was Club captain of the University of Canterbury Athletic Club in 1977 and 1978 and treasurer in 1991. He served on the Canterbury cross country committee where he was chairman for a number of years. He was chairman of the LOC when the New Zealand cross country championships were held at Cust in the 1980’s. Frank served on the executive of Athletics Canterbury and was Centre president for two terms 1987-89. He represented Canterbury at national cross country championships on numerous occasions. Frank was awarded five University Blues between 1974 and 1979.

Frank was on the council of Athletics NZ 1985 and 1986 representing Canterbury. He was a member of the Athletics NZ cross country and road committee for five years 1986-1990. He was a member of the Athletics NZ rules committee for four years 1987-1990.

More recently in New Zealand he was the statistician for the New Zealand census in 1996 and then he was asked to go to the UK to organise their census. This resulted in his family shifting and residing in London. Frank is survived by wife Mary and daughters Catherine and Daniela.
A funeral service will be held in London and then Frank will be brought back to the South Island for another funeral service and burial.

Auckland Centre official and Life Member of the Glen Eden Athletic and Harrier Club Katy Tapling died aged 61 on Sunday 14 October, after a short illness with a brain tumour. Katy was an active master athlete competing regularly in throwing events. She was a valued administrator and Life Member of the Auckland Masters Athletics Incorporated. Her late husband Fred was also a Life Member of the Glen Eden Club.
