John Kipkorir Mutai and Ndungu Pennina Wanjiru with course record, winners of a race that has become a sports celebration with the city involved
VI Maratón Cabberty Málaga has finished as the most participatory edition (3,750 runners). The result is a race that is growing to be consolidated as one of the best marathons at southern Europe.
The Kenyan John Kipkorir Mutai, who also won last year, was the first man to cross the finish line with a time of 2:13:17 ten seconds longer than last year. "It's a pleasure to run in Málaga. Running with this temperature and with the sun in December is fantastic. Next year I hope to beat the record because the route is flat and optimal to achieve it. It was a shame not have beaten my own record, but in the last minutes I ran alone and I would need someone to help me tod push. Next year I'll try again", said Kipkorir.
Second man was Benson Waweru, also from Kenya, with a time of 2:18:32, and the third was Abdelhadi El Mouaziz, Moroccan based in Spain form Athletics Club Nerja, with a time of 2:19:09. The first Spanish was Luis Enrique Lérida (2:29:05).
The Kenyan Ndungu Pennina Wanjiru was the female winner with a time of 2:37:46, women's record in the our race. "I'm very happy, it's my first victory in Spain running marathon. The route is fantastic to get good results. I am proud to have broken the record of the race", said Pennina.
The second classified was the Italian Anna Spagnoli with a time of 2:42:32 and the third woman the Spaniard Maite Maiora with 2:49:39.
Daniel Pérez, Sports Director of the event, is very happy: "I am very happy with all the work done, the race and participation make us very happy. See how they have involved Málaga, making the day a celebration for all ages, is priceless. Marathon Cabberty Malaga expects a long life", said Pérez.
The ambassadors Martín Fiz and Abel Antón ran to the half marathon to help athletes, showing that they still going strong. The Basque athlete has highlighted the growth of the race: "Marathon Cabberty Málaga is fantastic, Málaga public helped a lot. The bases are set to continue to grow the coming years. It is ideal for amateur runners to improve their objectives", says Fiz.
The double world champion Abel Anton, predicted a bright future: "Marathon Cabberty Málaga is growing year by year and has potential to be in the coming years one of the biggest marathons in Spain. People have taken a very good sense of this race and I foresee a very good future to the event in the coming years. It will be one of the big races, not only in Spain, also in Europe ".
