NEW DATE FOR VIENNA CITY MARATHON – Vienna City Marathon will be on 19th April 2009
The 26th edition of the Vienna City Marathon will take place on 19th April 2009. That is one week earlier than originally planned. Organisers decided to change the date to avoid the very busy last Sunday in April 2009, when the London Marathon and other marathons will take place.
“On the last Sunday in April we would have had a collision with other races, which would have been bad for the Vienna City Marathon. With the superb results from last Sunday we got a lot of international attention. We want to build on this and further improve the position of our race internationally,” said Race Director Wolfgang Konrad who further explained: “The new date with which we avoid the London Marathon date secures a high-quality organisation in all aspects once again. In some important parts of the organisation the Vienna City Marathon works with international specialists who will be involved again on 19th April 2009.”
Adding all running events the jubilee edition of the Vienna City Marathon had a record number of more than 25,000 finishers. 6,231 finished the marathon while there were 8,016 finishers in the half marathon. Abel Kirui (Kenya) set a course record with 2:07:38 while defending champion Luminita Talpos (Romania) clocked 2:26:43.
