The U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) on Tuesday announced that shot putter Adam Nelson has been named the organization's male Athlete of the Month for February.

A two-time Olympic silver medalist, Nelson (Charlottesville, Va.) opened the month on February 1 with a personal best at the 101st Millrose Games, where his mark of 22.07 meters/72 feet 5 inches, broke the Madison Square Garden and meet record. Two weeks later, he launched a world-leading throw of 22.40 meters/73 feet 6 inches, to win the men's shot put at the 2008 Tyson Invitational on February 15 in Fayetteville, Ark.

That distance is the third-best performance of all time. For his efforts, the four-time World Outdoor Championships medalist earned the title of 2008 USATF Indoor Men's Visa Championship Series champion, and a $25,000 paycheck.

Additional USOC awardees for February include Lindsey Vonn of U.S. Skiing and the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton World Championship Team.
