MOWA Exhibition Budapest reaches 20K visitors
Dear friends of MOWA,
The Museum of World Athletics Heritage Exhibition Budapest 2023, which was officially opened on 14 April, last week surpassed a total of twenty-thousand visitors.
The spectacular 600m2 exhibition, which celebrates the 40th anniversary of the first World Athletics Championships in Helsinki 1983, displays the world’s greatest collection of track & field competition memorabilia – clothing, shoes, equipment, and trophies – ever assembled.
The artefacts have been donated or loaned to MOWA by many of history’s greatest athletes including Paavo Nurmi, Jesse Owens, Fanny Blankers-Koen, Herb Elliott, Irena Szewinska, Carl Lewis, Marie-Jose Perec, Michael Johnson, Jan Zelezny, Allyson Felix, Usain Bolt, Valerie Adams and many, many more.
The exhibition is enriched by historic Hungarian athletics artefacts that have never been publicly displayed before.
The interactive displays, which focus on the history of the World Athletics Championships but also track athletics’ story back to the ancient Olympic Games, include text, graphics, photographs, VR, and video content.
The MOWA exhibition, which is located on the 3rd floor of Etele Plaza, Budapest’s newest shopping centre and is just 15mins away from the National Athletics Stadium which will host the World Athletics Championships Budapest (19 to 27 August), has another two months to run.
Treasure Hunt Thursdays
Since April, there have been visits by more than one thousand students from 28 schools located in the Budapest area.
A World Athletics Kids‘ Athletics Day event was held in the exhibition on 7 May which brought together over 60 young athletes from four local athletics clubs. During the event the MOWA comic book, „A Magical Athletics Journey“, was launched.
In addition, ‚Treasure Hunt Thursdays‘ in the exhibition during May and June saw 1000 tickets for the World Athletics Championships being distributed to children who took part in the MOWA Kids‘ Athletics Treasure Hunt.
Win a holiday to World Athletics Indoor Championships, Glasgow 24
Visitors continue to have the opportunity to enter a Holiday Free Prize Draw. The draw, which was opened by World Athletics President Sebastian Coe on 15 June, offers the chance to win a 4-night holiday for two people to the World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 2024 with flights, hotel and VIP accreditation included.
The name of the lucky winner will be drawn and announced on Saturday 26 August, the penultimate day of the World Athletics Championships Budapest 2023.

On Monday (3 July) members of the International Association of Sports Press (AIPS) were given a tour of the exhibition. Their visit followed that of a group of media from central Europe on 14 June, who attended a reception at the exhibition hosted by the local organising committee of Budapest 2023.
Five Hungarian world championships medallists opened the exhibition in May, and many more World and Olympic medallists and world record breakers from around the world will be visiting the exhibition in August attending a number of special events during the championships.
