Maritzburg Marathon/South Africa on 27th February – Apart Marathon and Half Marathon taking place on Sunday morning, 27th February, there will be fun run/walks for the whole family on Saturday afternoon 26th.
The 2011 Maritzburg Marathon was presented to the Media and other important role players at a launch held, last Thursday, at the Protea Imperial Hotel in Pietermaritzburg. The Mayor, Clr Mike Tarr emphasised the importance of the Maritzburg Marathon, along with other major sporting events, to the City and local business.
He committed the City to ensuring that the infrastructure would be in a fit state to showcase the city to the thousands of athletes and their families who will descend on Pietermaritzburg at the end of February.
Speaking on behalf of athletes, KwaZulu Natal Athletics President and member of the Board of Athletics South Africa, Mr Aleck Skhosana, commented on the high standard of the Maritzburg Marathon and its importance in the annual calendar. He commented on the organisational skills and attention to detail that the organising committee accept as their criteria.
John Hall, chairman of the race organising committee told of the extension of the registration period to include Friday evening 26th February, as well as Saturday where, in the past, entrants had only from Saturday afternoon to collect their race packages and enjoy the exhibits and fare available. Hall affirmed that KidZone, an innovation introduced in 2010, to care for the children of runners and spectators whilst they enjoy the Marathon, will be providing their services between 9am and 5pm on Saturday 26th February as well as on Sunday 27th, between 4am and noon. "Mom and Dad can take part together and know the kids are in good safe hands" said Hall.
Apart from the flagship Marathon and Half Marathon taking place on Sunday morning, 27th February, there will be fun run/walks for the whole family on Saturday afternoon 26th. All the events are based on the 42/21 idea of the Maritzburg Marathon.
Beginning at 2pm, fun runners and walkers of any age above 7 years, will be able to take on a single 2.1km lap or, for the more adventurous, a second lap, to complete 4.2kms.
Following this, the distances reduce with the size, age and ability of participants from 420 metre Juvenile Jog, a 210m Lightening Bolt, 42m Toddler Trot and finishing with a 21m Nappy Crawl. All the participants will receive a medal.
Anyone wanting to find out more should visit the race web site at www.pmb42.co.za.
Entries for the Marathon and Half Marathon close on Wednesday 9th February but all the fun run entries can be made at the Carbineers Drill Hall on Saturday 26th February, prior to the events.
"We are committed to staging the best ever Maritzburg Marathon." said Hall.
