The Amicale Sportive de l’Ambassade de France is pleased to organize a special panel discussion titled “Marathon Running – An Endless Family Journey” on the occasion of the 50th Berlin Marathon.

The event will take place on 20 September 2024 at 6:00 PM at the On Community Hub (Köpenicker Str. 122, 10179 Berlin).

Running is more than just a sport. It has the power to connect people across distances, cultures, and generations. It fosters personal growth, resilience, and creates a sense of belonging within a global community, the „family of runners.“

This panel discussion will highlight the profound impact of running on people’s lives and connections.

Three remarkable individuals will share their inspiring stories, demonstrating how the sport of running intertwines heritage, family, and the search for belonging:

• Horst Milde: The founding father of the Berlin Marathon and a central figure in transforming the event into a global phenomenon. Under his leadership, the Berlin Marathon grew into an international celebration of community and endurance.

He served as race director until 2004, when he passed the role on to his son Mark. His legacy continues to shape the world of running today.

• Martin W. Teague: A U.S. Army veteran and participant in the first Berlin Marathon in 1974. Not only did Martin run the marathon, but he also celebrated his wedding and „honeymoon“ in Berlin. Fifty years later, he will once again run the race and celebrate his anniversary with his wife, Jane.

• Mirae kh Rhee: A Berlin-based artist and founder of the project „Run Towards My Family.“ She uses marathon running to raise awareness about the experiences of Korean adoptees abroad and their search for their biological families. This autumn, she will participate in the JTBC Seoul Marathon to draw attention to the fate of over 200,000

South Korean families separated by international adoptions. This event offers a unique opportunity to experience the power of running as a unifying force and a source of inspiration.

We warmly invite all interested parties to attend this special event.
