The Berlin Marathon was held last Sunday and they really turned it on by achieving a new Marathon World Record. Congratulations also to the RunFunners who took part. More below.

Marathon World Record Shattered in Berlin

After coming so close to matching the world record two years ago, Wilson Kipsang (KEN) broke the world record in Berlin last Sunday, clocking 2:03:23 and taking 15 seconds of Patrick Makau's (KEN) 2:03:38 set in the same race two years ago.

Second, in only his second marathon, former world 5000m track champion, Eliud Kipchoge, finished second in 2:04:05, taking a minute of his debut best; while Geoffery Kipsang (KEN, no relation) ran third in 2:06:26, a personal best.

As an (Australian) aside…. Kipchoge won the world 5000m championship in Paris in 2003. In Helsinki in 2005 he was relegated to 4th place by Australia's Craig Mottram, the bronze medallist.

In the women's race, Florence Kiplagat took line honours in 2:21:13 ahead of compatriot Sharon Cherop in 2:22:38.

Berlin has firmly established itself as the "marathon world record' capital and this year the event celebrated its 40th Anniversary race by assembling their previous world record holders in Berlin.
