Kosice Marathon – Neverending Deluge of Marathons

By GRR 0

There are 72 marathons all over the world which were founded before 1970 and have kept their continuity, so they were organized in 2015 as well. 38 of them managed to organize all af the following years meaning they could avoid war obstacles, natural disasters or economic crisis.

By looking at these de facto historic marathons we would like to accentuate how legacy, continuity and sport quality works all together well in Košice since 1924. In 2015 winning time in Košice (2:07:07) was the second best among all above mentioned 72 marathons.

We must say that year 2015 is not any sporadic case and that quality of Košice sport performances has its long tradition.

As a matter of fact winning times of Zabala (1931) and Popov (1959) were world´s best season performances and also many other times achieved in Košice have been repeatedly part of world top ten.

When trying to find objective criteria of sport performance quality we have used an index that demonstrates the ratio between the Košice best time in particular year and best world marathon performance in the same  year.

We can see index 1,000 in mentioned years 1931 and 1959 and also very high level of Leonard Edelen's winning time in 1963. Beside this it is obvious  how quality of performanes has been growing during last years.

Just have a look at the fact that Košice winning time in 2012 – 2:07:01 (ranking 52nd position worldwide) has better index than winning times from 1946 when Mikko Hietanen hit the World´s 5th position.
