Japanese Men Dominate World University Games Half Marathon – Day Five Japanese Results – by Brett Larner – Japan Running News

Following in the footsteps of his former Aoyama Gakuin University teammate Takehiro Deki's win at last weekend's Gold Coast Half Marathon, Yusuke Ogura became the first Japanese man since 2001 to win the World University Games half marathon taking gold in 1:04:41.

Ogura, who played a key role in AGU's course record-setting Hakone Ekiden win in January and ran 1:02:03 at February's Marugame Half Marathon, led his AGU teammate and National University Half Marathon champion Tadashi Isshiki and Yuta Takahashi (Teikyo Univ.) in a sweep of the podium, the first time in World University Games history that men from a single country have taken all three half marathon medals.

A slow first 10 km kept most of the field together, but a move from the Japanese athletes shortly after that broke things up quickly, and by 15 km they were well ahead of chasers Soufiane Bouchikhi (Belgium) and Naoki Kudo (Komazawa Univ.), the runner-up behind Isshiki at the National University Half.  Takahashi dropped off the AGU teammates' pace, and near 19 km Isshiki likewise lost touch with Ogura who cruised in for the win.  Isshiki, 6 seconds slower than Ogura in Marugame, took silver in 1:04:52 with Takahashi sealing up bronze in 1:05:29.  Bouchikhi was well back in 4th in 1:06:04, 6 seconds ahead of Kudo.  Scheduled to run the 5000 m final later in the day after doubling in the 10000 m, Hironori Tsuetaki (Chuo Gakuin Univ.) started the half marathon but dropped out after only 5 km.

The women nearly achieved the same, Nanako Kanno of 2014 National University Women's Ekiden champion Ritsumeikan University and Ayumi Uehara (Matsuyama Univ.) setting the pace through 15 km accompanied only by Maki Izumida (Rikkyo Univ.) and World University Games 10000 m bronze medalist Yingying Zhang (China).  Over the last 5 km Zhang pushed the pace, the Japanese runners falling off one by one until Zhang was in the clear for the win in 1:15:06.  Kanno scored silver in 1:15:24 with Uehara close behind for bronze in 1:15:35.  Izumida faded to 4th in 1:16:09 but stayed well ahead of Nilay Ersun (Turkey) who came up from the chase pack for 5th in 1:16:09.

2015 Kanto Regional University Championships 5000 m and 10000 m winner Sakurako Fukuuchi (Daito Bunka Univ.) had an off day, taking 7th in 1:17:44, while Sakie Arai (Osaka Gakuin Univ.), doubling in the half after running the 10000 m earlier in the week, dropped out after 5 km.

Both the women's and men's teams also took gold in team scoring.

Hurdler Genta Masuno (Kokusai Budo Univ.) became the third Japanese medalist in athletics at the Gwangju World University Games, taking bronze in the men's 110 mH final.  After a decently quick start Masuno lost ground to eventual gold and silver medalists Greggmar Swift (Barbados) and Konstantin Shabanov (Russia), but with a solid kick after the final hurdle he was strong enough to hang on to 3rd as he made the podium in 13.69 by a margin of just 0.03 seconds.

No such luck in the day's distance final, the women's 5000 m, where favorites Natsuki Omori (Ritsumeikan Univ.) and Rina Koeda (Daito Bunka Univ.) sat through a slow first 4000 m that saw almost the entire field wait it out for a sprint finish over the last 1000 m.  Kristina Maki (Czech Republic) had the gear to find gold, running 2:55.32 for the final km, with the top 8 all finishing within less than 7 seconds of her.  Omori and Koeda were on the losing end of the group, taking 7th and 8th respectively.

In other events, men's long jumper Yasuhiro Moro (Juntendo Univ.) and the men's 4×400 m and 4×100 m all qualified for the finals, the men's 4×100 m squad leading all three heats in a solid 38.93 season best.

World University Games Day Three Japanese Results

Japanese athletes came up empty-handed on day three of the 2015 Gwangju World University Games, none of the three athletes to make finals on the day scoring medals.  Takamasa Kitagawa (Juntendo Univ.) was short in the men's 400 m final, running 46.03 for 7th.  After running well in the men's 200 m heats and semifinals, Takuya Nagata (Hosei Univ.) and Kotaro Taniguchi (Chuo Univ.) likewise had trouble translating that into success in the final, finishing 6th and 7th.

A day after winning bronze in the men's 10000 m, Keisuke Nakatani (Komazawa Univ.) returned to win the relatively slow second heat of the 5000 m in 14:01.40.  3000 mSC national champion Hironori Tsuetaki (Chuo Gakuin Univ.) likewise doubled from the 10000 m, placing 2nd in the faster heat one in 14:01.40.  Promising in the men's 110 mH heats, Genta Masuno (Kokusai Budo Univ.) ran 13.76 for 2nd in his heat, advancing on.  With a full 100 m – 200 m double schedule, Anna Doi (Daito Bunka Univ.) had trouble in the 200 m semifinals, finishing only 7th and failing to make the final.  Ai Yamauchi (Osaka Seikei Univ.) was eliminated in the women's javelin throw qualification round, throwing 50.59 m for 10th in her group.
