Donetsk, Ukraine – 11 July 2013 – It was so near yet so far for Dutee Chand, the 17-year-old girl from Orissa, in the 100m final here on Thursday night. After a thrilling 11.62 secs clocking on Wednesday’s first round heats, Chand finished third in her semi-finals yesterday with a time of 11.72s and moved on to the finals as a fastest runner.
In the last night’s final Dutee reacted rather slowly (0.167) to the starter’s gun and thus caused heavily in determining the final placings. She finished sixth in 11.71 secs.
Americans Ky Westbrook (11.33) and Ariana Washington (11.40) takes the first two places while Angela Tenorio of Ecuador was a shade away in 11.41s for the bronze.
Dutee’s time in heats (11.62) surpassed both Indian youth (u-18) and junior (u-20) records!
Dutee Chand is taking part in 200m heats on Friday. In the recently concluded Asian championships at Pune she won a bronze medal in this event.
