Indian Athletics – News – 14th IAAF World Championships,Moscow, Russia – Team of 15 Indian athletes selected for World championships
New Delhi – 20 July 2013 – The Athletics Federation of India today selected a team of 15 athletes, including 8 women, to take part in next month’s World championships in Athletics at Moscow (Russia).
In the men’s section three 20 km race walkers who attained “A” grade qualification will spearhead Indian challenge led by national record-holder K.T. Irfan. In the longer 50 km race walk Basant Bahadur Rana, who achieved “A” standard during last year’s London Olympics, will be in action with Sandeep—the winner of this year’s National Race Walking championships at Patiala.
Barring Rana all other athletes achieved Worlds qualification in 2013.
Ashwini Akkunji, a member of gold winning Indian Team in the Commonwealth (Delhi) and Asian (Guangzhou) Games in 2010, is now forming part of the national 4x400m relay squad to Moscow.
TEAM
MEN: K.T. Irfan, Gurmeet Singh and Chandan Singh (all 20 km walk), Basant Bahadur Rana and Sandeep (both 50 km walk), Vikas Gowda (Discus throw) and Renjith Maheswary (Triple jump);
WOMEN: Khushbir Kaur (20 km walk), Sudha Singh (3000m steeplechase), M.R. Poovamma, Tintu Luka, Nirmala Sheoran, Anu Mariam Jose, Ashwini Akkunji and Anilda Thomas (all 4 x 400m relay).
