Henryk Paskal and his donation for the Berlin sports-museum – AIMS Marathoneun

We have often reported here about Henryk Paskal, the Race Director of the Philips PILA Half Marathon in Poland, and about is race.

As a former successful Polish marathon runner (2:16), he has traveled to many international events. At the end of his career he served as the manager for many top Polish runners, so that brought him to even more races around the world, especially in Asia—and more precisely, in Japan.

He is a “talented” collector, and at these races and visits abroad with his athletes, he has gathered and piled up all kinds of souvenirs, documents, and information both in his home in PILA.

He has always presented a small exhibit of his collection in a small and lovingly decorated hall at his annual half marathon event. Two years ago, he put on display an incredible quantity of running magazines and programs/brochures from the many races he had visited around the world. In one corner you could admire a bunch of beautiful Japanese fans with the logos of races from all around Japan.

Henryk Paskal knows the AIMS-Marathoneum in Berlin very well. Every year when he traveled to Berlin with a bus full of Polish runners, he always brought along a bag of artifacts for the museum with him. When he came to see our exhibit two years ago, it became clear to him that he would have to give away some of his “treasures” from his own exhibition.

We have already reported here about the “musem donations” that he made. This year he left his exhibit alone and did some “cleaning up” in his office.

He had a huge number of books, especially the annual IAAF yearbooks and books from other associations, and original letter correspondence with Bill Rodgers, the Boston champion, as well as numerous gifts from event organizers, such as ties, tie clips, cuff links, which the Japanese like a lot, pins, medals, photos, posters, and many Polish running books—the list is long.

The Sport Museum – Marathoneum is delighted with the new donation of this great collection, and about the “secret agreement” that Henryk will be giving his entire collection to the Marathoneum in two years.

In addition to the Dr. David Martin Collection from the USA and the Wim Verhoorn Collection from Holland, the museum will then have another treasure from the world of running and athletics in its archives.

Many thanks go out to Poland and to Henryk Paskal and his wife Helena – (along with the wish that Henryk will continue to collect things on many more trips over the next two years!).
