The real heroes of the 50th Berlin Marathon in 2024 are the finishers from the premiere in 1974:
Marty W. Teague/USA – 73 years in 5:17:59
Günter Hallas/Berlin – 82 years in 7:02:33 – winner of 1974
Peter Bartel/Berlin – 82 years in 8:59:18
Wilfried Köhnke/Berlin – 77 years – finished his 48th Berlin Marathon

Horst Milde, the founder and long-time race director of the Berlin Marathon, handed over the book for the 50th anniversary of the race, which took place last Sunday, to Berlin’s governing mayor Kai Wegner at the Berlin City Hall today.

The Forum for Sports History (Berlin Sports Museum / AIMS Marathon Museum of Running) recently published the 248-page volume titled “Immer wieder Marathon!” (Marathon, Marathon, Again and Again). There is no other work even remotely comparable to this anniversary publication.
The anniversary journals published in 1998 and 2003 for the 25th and 30th Berlin Marathons, respectively, have long been out of print. In addition to the unique, multi-faceted history of the Berlin Marathon, which is connected to the city’s history like no other race in the once-divided Berlin, the early history of running, starting with ancient Greece, and the historical running developments in Berlin are also presented.
In addition, “Marathon Again and Again!” is a tribute to Horst Milde, the founder of the Berlin Marathon.
