Russia’s Ivan Ukhov remains unbeaten this winter after six meetings when he found that 2.34m was sufficient to win the famous Hochsprung mit Musik – High Jump with Music – meeting in the German town of Arnstadt on Saturday.
Ukhov was flawless at the 35th edition of the meeting, which can be said to have been the inspiration for many meetings of its kind which have been established in its wake, up to and including his winning height.
He then had three attempts at 2.39m, which would have been a meeting record and 2011 world leading mark, and went very close with his third try.
Fellow Russian and 2010 European Athletics Championships gold medallist Aleksandr Shustov and German number one Raul Spank tied for second place with 2.31m.
Svetlana Shkolina, the who won the Russian indoor title earlier this week, won the women’s competition with her first time clearance at 1.95m before unsuccessfully trying 2.00m.
Another Russian Irina Gordeyeva got second place with 1.92m while Germany’s Marie-Laurence Jungfleisch acquired a personal best and third place when she went over the same height, but the local athlete had more failures in the competition.
Elsewhere in Germany, Malte Mohr won the Potsdam Pole Vault meeting on Saturday which held in a shopping centre, with an indoor personal best of 5.86m.
However, truthfully, it was a morally a joint victory with Ukraine’s 2010 European Athletics Championships silver medallist Maksim Mazuryk for the German vaulter.
Both men got over 5.86m on their third attempts and then tried three times without success at 5.91m.
With nothing to separate them, a jump-off ensued but neither man could get over 5.91m at the fourth time of asking, after which both jumpers decided that they were too tired to continue
However, the judged demanded that a winner had to be established, and a draw came out in Mohr’s favour. Germany’s Bjorn Otto was third with 5.61m.
