European Marathon weekend round-up – An impressive field of 16,000 took part in the Antwerp Marathon and it was a Belgian, Rik Ceulemans, who finished a close second in 2:16:56

Italian Alberico Di Cecco took a very impressive second place in the 8th Padua Marathon, in a top quality 2:10:39 while his fellow Italian Vincenza Sicari clocked new PB to win the women’s event in 2:30:34.

Yet another Italian, Lucilla Andreucci took second in 2:33:29 making it a very satisfying weekend for Italian marathon running.

The 30th Madrid Marathon saw a field of 13,000 runners taking part and the leading European was home-based runner, Israel Garcia Carrasco, who took 10th place in 2:25:29. Spain’s Remedios Alonso took second in the women’s event in 2:58:11.

2005 European Cup 10,000m Champion Sabrina Mockenhaupt won the Bonn half-marathon in 1:11:56 to confirm her recent good form and Ukrainian Taras Salo won the Wroclaw Marathon in 2:18:04, ahead of his team-mate Viktor Starodubtsev in 2:20:41.

There was home success in the women’s event, however, when Katarzyna Dziwosz set a new personal best to win in 2:49:06.

An impressive field of 16,000 took part in the Antwerp Marathon and it was a Belgian, Rik Ceulemans, who finished a close second in 2:16:56 while his 33-year-old team mate, Anja Smolders, won the women event in her debut 2:41:20.

Defending Champion Marcel Matanin from Slovakia defended his title at the 31st Leipzig Marathon in a below par time of 2:26:21. None of the leading women were inside 3 hours.
