European Athletics (EAA) – News – Rothlin to defend his European title in Zurich

European marathon champion Viktor Rothlin of Switzerland has confirmed that he will continue his running career.

The 37-year-old confirmed this at a press conference in Zurich, adding that his main goal is to defend his title at the 2014 European Athletics Championships marathon, which will take place in his home country.

The marathon course was presented at the same media conference.

Kanter wins in Estonia

Diamond League winner Gerd Kanter of Estonia won the Ergo World Games in Kose, Estonia, with an effort of 64.62m.

Second place was Eric Cadee of the Netherlands (63.79m), while Ehsan Hadadi of Iran was third (61.58m) with Poland's Piotr Malachowski fourth (61.27m).

Australian record holder Ben Harradine was ninth (59.32m), while the top Russian was 12th placed Bogdan Pishchalnikov (56.01m).

In the team competition, the European team of Erik Cadee and German Daniel Stahl won with 124.04m, beating Estonia I (Kanter, Tammert, 123.60m) and Poland (Malachowski, Urbanek, 121.81m).
In the shot put Andrei Borodkin of Ukraine threw 19.29m.

Winter hangs up his spikes

German long jumper Nils Winter competed in the last meet of his career in Brno, Czech Republic, and finished third with a best effort of 7.44m (+0.8m).

The winner was Czech jumper Stepan Wagner (7.81m, +0.2), ahead of the experienced Jamaican James Beckford (7.59m, 0.0).

Lagat, England among top names at the 5th Avenue Mile

Top names will be competing at the 5th Avenue Mile in New York, a race in which British and American athletes have amassed a combined 35 victories since its founding in 1981.

The British attack will be led by 2011 IAAF World Championships silver medallist Hannah England, who will be joined by Olympic steeplechasers Barbara Parker and Eilish McColgan (daughter of 1991 ING New York City Marathon champion Liz McColgan). Distance runner Julia Bleasdale, who finished eighth in both the 5,000m and 10,000m in London will also compete.

On the U.S, side, defending champions Bernard Lagat and Jenny Simpson have committed to the race, along with Olympic silver medallist Leo Manzano and his Olympic 1500 metre teammates, Matthew Centrowitz and Shannon Rowbury.

The invited field of about 35 athletes from four different nations, 14 of which are Olympians, will no doubt create a true spectacle for the large crowds that will line what is normally one of Manhattan's busiest streets.
