European athletes celebrated a successful time on the second day of the IAAF World Youth Championships in Donetsk.

And for Norway's Karsten Warholm, further proof of what the future might hold for a multi-eventer with outstanding talent.

Warholm is 17 and from the moment he ran a personal best of 10.86 for the quickest time in the 100m in the opening event of the boys' Octathlon on Wednesday, he gained a lead in the event that he never lost.

He took the title with 6451 points to move him to fifth- equal on the World youth all-time list.

And it was a performance that gave him a clear victory with Feliks Shestopalov, of Russia, second with 6260 and the Czech Republic's Jan Dolezal third with 6222.

It was a case of pbs all-round for Warholm who set another five individual lifetime landmarks after his brilliant opening 100m.

He ran 48.09 for the 400m, 13.86 for the 110m hurdles, cleared 2.02m for the high jump, reached 12.94m in the shot put and in the last event, ran 2:45.80 for the 1000m which in the final stages became a race sparked with celebration.

There was gold for Russia in the boys' long jump as 16-year-old Anatloiy Ryapolov's second round effort of 7.79m was enough for glory.

He was never troubled. Infact, any of his four legal efforts would have brought victory, with 7.71m, 7.65m and 7.63m, all ahead of China's Fang Yaoqing who was second on countback from Isaiah Moore, of the USA, with the pair both jumping a best of 7.53m.

Turkey's Emel Dereli, 17, won the girls’ Shot put with a personal best of 20.14m in the first round.

And while Dereli might have had to have waited the whole competition to see if that was going to be enough, her lead was never threatened.

She had only one more legal effort, 18.96m, in the second round but she was always in charge.

Alena Bugakova, of Russia, won silver with 18.60m and the USA's Ashlie Blake won bronze with 17.57m.

The boys' 100m went to a photo-finish, with Great Britain's Ojie Edoburun just being pipped to gold by China’s Mo Youxue.

It was so close with the pair both recording times of 10.35 ahead of Cuba’s Reynier Mena who was third in 10.37.

Edoburn, 17, said:  “This time last year I was struggling to make the national championships, so to run 10.35, I am so happy."
