European Athletics Championships Zürich 2014- What’s on when? For which days of competition should I buy tickets?
Tuesday, 12 August: The Day of the Swiss
The opening day of the championships will mostly be in the hands of local heroes: Many of the more than 40 Swiss athletes expected to qualify will have their competition on the very first day of Zürich 2014. In addition to many heats and qualifying rounds, there will also be two finals: the men’s shot put and the women’s 10000 m. And the kings of athletics, the decathletes, will have their first of two competition days. As soon as the athletes are done for the day, the grand opening ceremony will be underway. Enjoy a unique show which will include DJ Bobo, tightrope artist Freddy Nock, Sunrise Avenue, some surprising elements – and mascot icon Cooly.
Wednesday, 13 August: Europe’s Fastest
On Wednesday, you will get to cheer the fastest people of Europe in their 100 m final events. And you will be able to marvel at the speed at which the competitors in the women’s 100 m hurdles will fly over the obstacles in their final. The evening session, which will include as many as six final events, will be rounded off with a show dedicated to Switzerland’s young generation with the up-and-coming band Plasma from the Grisons.
Thursday, 14 August: Field Athletes in the Limelight
Three exciting technical events will be the main acts of this day: the women’s pole vault, the women’s javelin throw, and the men’s triple jump final. The steeplers and the high hurdlers will be in charge of the track action, and the athletes of the heptathlon will embark on their journey of events. The 200 m runners, hopefully including six Swiss athletes (three women and three men) will tackle the heats of their competition in the morning and the semi-finals in the evening. The show at the end of this third day of competition will feature Trauffer, a modern-day Alpine musician, who will celebrate Zurich as the “gate to the Swiss Alps“.
Friday, 15 August: The Night of the Runners
On Friday, the legendary Letzigrund Stadium track will be on: As many as seven track finals will be held. In addition, the champions in the men’s high jump and the women’s hammer throw will be crowned. And finally, you will be able to support the heptathletes in their quest for medals. Local singer Marc Sway will provide the musical highlight at the end of the evening session.
Saturday, 16 August: Acrobats in Action
On Saturday morning, all eyes will be on the women running the marathon in the city centre. At Letzigrund Stadium, the afternoon will bring seven final events, including the men’s pole vault, one of the most spectacular disciplines in the sport of athletics. And it will be time for some of the most exciting ones: the relays. Cheer the teams in their heats for the 4×100 m and the 4×400 m. The session will be topped off with another multimedia show. Enjoy a tribute to Zurich’s famous Street Parade with DJ Tito Torres.
Sunday, 17 August: A Farewell Race and a Grand Finale
Reigning European champion Viktor Röthlin will run his farewell race on the final day of the championships. The challenging race course takes the athletes through the city centre and past some of Zurich’s most beautiful sights. The afternoon session at Letzigrund Stadium will boast no less than 11 finals, including those of all relay events.
The grand Zürich 2014 finale will be celebrated with an impressive closing ceremony and a stunning cast of musicians, including Caroline Chevin, Eliana Burki, Marc Sway, and Trauffer.
