Daegu, Korea – The Local Organizing Committee has unveiled the designs of the special edition commemorative coins of the IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011, which will be issued by The Bank of Korea on 11 August 2011.
Measuring 33mm in diameter and weighing at 19 grams, each commemorative coin is made of 99.9% proof silver, thereby giving it a frosted and polished appearance. The front side of the coin comprises the local elements of the official emblem, with the image of an athlete sprinting across the finish line and the colourful swirls exuding the host city’s ‘Colorful Daegu’ brand. The back of the coin features a High Jump athlete and the curves of a track.
A total of 30,000 coins will be issued to the public, mostly within Korea. Interested collectors residing in Korea are required to apply for the commemorative coins in two banks to be designated by the Bank of Korea, the minting authority. Selected applicants will receive the coins from 23 August.
Only 3000 of the total number of coins will be sold overseas in selected territories, which at the moment are China, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and the United States of America. Interested international collectors should make their reservations through the Korea Minting & Security Printing Corporation (KOMSCO). The commemorative coins will be distributed to the selected applicants from 18 August.
In the event that the demand for the coins exceeds the supply, the successful applicants will be selected by ballot.
