Copenhagen 2014 domestic mass race entries sell out in four hours
1 December 2012 – Copenhagen, Denmark – In yet another sign of strong demand for big city road races, organisers announced that 18,000 domestic entries were sold out in less than four hours on Thursday for the mass race that will be part of the IAAF/AL-Bank World Half Marathon Championships, 29 March 2014. However 5,000 entry numbers have been reserved for foreign runners and are still available.
“We did anticipate a rush for race numbers,” says Jakob Larsen, CEO of the Danish Athletic Federation as he evaluated the sales. Larsen said that when the federation realized the massive demand they added another 3000 to the 15,000 already sold. Those numbers were quickly claimed as well.
For the first time ever the World Half Marathon Championships will be transformed into to a gigantic running festival for both elite and recreational runners. It will be a fast, flat and scenic run through the heart of Copenhagen.
While 18,000 entry numbers and sold out for now, Larsen said that 5,000 race entry numbers have been stored for foreign runners and will go on sale sometime next year. Another 2,000 race numbers will be kept for the use of promoting running in Denmark via local athletics clubs and the national federation.
“Copenhagen has a reputation of hosting major, international sports events and has recently been awarded the Sports City 2012 award for mid-sized cities," says Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark that partners the event. "Denmark is also a running nation and this massive demand on race numbers for the IAAF/AL-Bank World Half Marathon 2014 underlines this. We look forward to welcoming the world of running to Denmark in 2014.”
