Marathons are held on four continents on 27 September, staring with the Nedbank Cape Town Marathon. The Lake Garda Marathon (ITA) is the only one held in Europe, but there are also two halves: the Maratonina Citta di Udine and the Dexia Bill Route du Vin Half Marathon in Luxemburg.
Apart from that, the Fortis Singelloop 10km Utrecht takes place in Holland, where there is a possibility of a new 10km world record on the road. The Half Marathon of Portugal Vodafone has been postponed from its usual date until next weekend (4 October).
Across the Atlantic it is mostly marathons, with the Maraton Internacional de Foz do Iguazu at the famous waterfall and the Maraton Internacional de la Ciudad de Mexico, postponed from a month ago. Between them, the Costa Rica 10km is also held. In North America there are hopes that the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon may establish a new Canadian all-comers record, improving the mark set in their race two years ago.
The Lake Tahoe Marathon brings the day's schedule to a close.
