Colfax Marathon Awards $50,000 for Charity to Corporate Relay Teams

By GRR 0

DENVER — The Kaiser Permanente Colfax Marathon awarded $50,000 in charitable donations to winning teams in the 2013 Corporate and Government Cup Marathon Relay. The awards were presented to the winning teams and their designated local charities at the 2013 Corporate Cup and Marathon Relay Celebration at McNichols Civic Center.

"The Marathon is a unique event that brings together thousands of people every year to have fun, be fit, and raise money for charities," Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock stated in his opening remarks. "We are pleased to see so many teams running in the Corporate and Government Cup. It's a great way to encourage employee wellness."

Mayor Hancock awarded the Paul Ryan Champion's Award to the City of Lakewood and the Lakewood Police Department for their efforts to help the race continue when the barricade company shut their doors 48 hours before the race. The award was introduced this year in honor of the late Paul Ryan, who was the Denver Mayor's Director of Regional Affairs and a Colfax Marathon advocate.

Two hundred teams from more than 100 companies competed in the 5-person marathon relay Corporate Cup in 2013, and 82 teams competed in the Government Cup division. Companies with multiple teams competing included UPS (with 15 teams), Kaiser Permanente, Ernst and Young, Saunders Construction, Mortenson Construction and ReadyTalk (3 winning teams).

Winning teams in the men's, women's and co-ed divisions of the Corporate Cup Relay and Government Cup Relay were allowed to select one of the 122 nonprofits that participated in the 2013 DaVita Charity Partners Program to be recipients of the charitable donations made by the Colfax Marathon. Additionally, 11 Industry teams received awards for charity.

"Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado was excited to learn we were the charity of choice for Denver School of Science and Technology's winning team," said Katie Groke Ellis, Director of Communications and Marketing for the nonprofit.  "Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado is proud to partner with the Colfax Marathon and look forward to recruiting more runners to run on our behalf."

The Corporate Cup Relay was part of the two-day Colfax Marathon weekend on May 18-19, 2013.

"The Colfax Marathon's Corporate Cup has become a standout example of how local companies can integrate fitness into their corporate wellness programs," stated Andrea Dowdy, CEO of the Kaiser Permanente Colfax Marathon. "
