Breathtaking Jerusalem Winner Marathon – March 21, 2014
Mayors Greeting – Dear Runners,
As a dedicated sports enthusiast and marathon runner, who has participated in five marathons in different cities around the world, I can personally attest that there is nothing like the Jerusalem Marathon.
This is an opportunity to get a direct experience of the city in all its aspects: the various communities, the amazing landscape, the new cultural centers, its fascinating history, the fast-growing development and construction, and the unique touristic sites, all this while breathing the proverbial ''mountain air- as clear as wine''.
The Jerusalem Marathon was chosen at the beginning of 2013 by the British running magazine ''Women's running Magazine'' as one of the top 10 international spring running events around the world. Without any doubt, the fascinating and challenging running course in Jerusalem provides the perfect experience for the runners, in a city that many people around the world turn their eyes to.
In the last year, more than 20,000 runners from 54 different countries participated in the marathon, and it was the biggest international marathon in Israel, with 1,730 participants from abroad. The Jerusalem Marathon is also the most socially engaged one in Israel, and in the last year over 5,500 runners participated to promote social causes.
This is the fourth year of the Jerusalem Marathon, and it is expected to be an extraordinary experience, just like the ones before. I would like to invite you- all runners, amateurs and professionals alike, alone, in groups or families, students and soldiers, of all religions and ethnic backgrounds, to come and take part in the 2014 marathon, which will be even bigger, more exciting and unforgettable then before.
The forth International Jerusalem Marathon will be launched on 21 March 2014.
See you all the starting line!
Nir Barkat
Mayor of Jerusalem

The Knesset
On 14 February 1949, the “Founding Assembly” convened for the first time, headed by Yosef Sprinzak, who was elected to chair the meeting.
The Assembly voted to change its name to the Knesset Israel. Two days later, several very important decisions were taken, including the vote to elect haim Weizmann as the first President of the State of Israel. The swearing-in ceremony was held the day after the vote. On 8 March 1949, Israel’s first Prime Minister, David Ben Gurion, presented his government, and a month later, announced the cease-fire agreements with Arab countries. On 26 April 1949, the austerity regime was announced in order to absorb the huge wave of immigrants that was flooding the country. On 11 May 1949, Israel was accepted as a member of the United Nations Organization. While the UN was discussing the status of Jerusalem, the Knesset plenum held a special meeting, which decided that Jerusalem was the eternal capital of the People of Israel and declared the opening of the first official session of the Knesset at the Jewish Agency Building in Jerusalem. The Knesset later moved to its permanent premises on Kaplan Street in Jerusalem. At the entrance to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the runners turn left and circle the Givat Ram Campus returning to Ruppin Street via the Israel Museum. From there, the runners continue in the direction on Netanel Lorch Street and climb in the direction of Yitzhak Rabin Boulevard. |
