São Paulo (SP) – Brazilians dominated the 24th São Paulo International Marathon, the main marathon event in the country. On Sunday morning (8th), at Ibirapuera Park, Solonei da Silva won the men’s singles for the second time – repeating his victory of 2012 – and Andréia Hessel won the women’s debut in the competition.

Solonei clocked 2h15min55sec for the 42,195 meters by the avenues and bridges of Pinheiros River in the capital of São Paulo state; another Brazilian, Wellington Bezerra da Silva, followed him with 2h16min06sec.

Andréia had completed the race in 2h40min07sec, with a lead of 1min30sec for second place, Ethiopian Shewaye Woldemeskel, 2:41min37sec. The third place was also Brazilian Valdilene Silva, with the mark of 2h42min38sec.

The 24th edition of the São Paulo Marathon, an AIMS Full Member, came with new features especially in the course, became more straight and flat. The results were better than last year, showing that the initiative of Yescom Organizers have worked.

„I enjoyed the course, but it’s still hard and also interesting. I suffered because I had surgery last year and I could not train as I wanted. My pace was not adequate all the time, but it was worth putting Brazil at the top of the podium, said the two-time Champion”.

In the race, Solonei took the lead from km 34. He and Wellington Bezerra, fourth in 2017, were together until almost the end of the race, when the winner managed to open and win the São Paulo Marathon once again. „It was my first event after two years and it was not easy. I want to thank my coach and my club for their support and trust. It was not the results I wanted, but I’m very happy. “

Female
Andréia made her debut in the Marathon of São Paulo, his first marathon race in the country. The athlete is number four the national ranking and made a real test, especially from the second half. The positive performance can be confirmed by the good advantage for the second placed.

„It was the fulfillment and a dream. All the training was worth it. Running a marathon distance at home for the first time and getting the top of the podium is an incredible thing, „said the winner, who had run twice in Hamburg Marathon and at the Ibero-American Championship in Buenos Aires, where she was the winner”.
