By admin 0

Monday, 15 October 2012 – The Soweto Marathon does not only cater for long distance marathon runners, as other events such as elite race walking and a 10km wheelchair race for disabled athletes, also form a part of the event.

Elite race walking is a technical event and should not be confused with social or casual walking.  This event specifically will cater for elite race walkers. Race walking is defined as a progression of steps taken that the walker makes contact with the ground at all time.  No visible loss of contact may occur at any point in time. The advancing leg shall be straightened (i.e. not bent at the knee) from the moment of first contact with the ground until the vertical upright position.

Athletes competing in the wheelchair event must take note of the guidelines of wheelchair racing.  Please visit https://www.paralympic.org/Athletics/Rules for full rules and regulations.

The 10km wheelchair race and the 10km elite race walk will take place on Saturday, 3 November with only the marathon and the 10km run/walk taking place on the Sunday, as in the past.

Entry forms can be completed at sport shops which include the following.  The Sweatshop Dunkheld, the Sweatshop Irene, Bedford Runner Bedfordview, Run-a-Way Sport Lynwood, Randburg Runner, Running Inn, Sportsmans Warehouse The Glen, Orlando Community Hall.  Mr Price stores nationwide will also have entry forms available.

Online entry forms are available at www.enteronline.co.za as well as www.mrpriceheroes.co.za.

Entry fees for both the elite race walk as well as the wheelchair race will be R85 while athletes over the age of 60 can enter free of charge.  Prize money worth R5000 is available for the winners of both categories wheelchair athletes as well as for the winners of the 10km professional walk.

All entry forms and deposit slips can be faxed to 086 773 8277 or hand delivered at the Soweto Marathon Race office at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, Office No. 35 Auditorium, Cnr Nasrec and Randshow Road at Nasrec, Johannesburg.

Everybody entering the Soweto Marathon before the closing date will receive a T-shirt at a number collection venue nearest to you.  This includes Pilditch Stadium in Tshwane on 31 October and 1 November and at the JHB Expo Centre situated in Nasrec on 2 and 3 November.  All events race numbers will be obtained at the abovementioned venues and not at sport shops.  Entries close on 21 October 2011.
