Athletics South Africa – News – SOWETO – ASPIRING RUNNERS CAN ALSO ENJOY SOWETO
Tuesday, 30 October 2012 – For athletes that are interested in running, but not ready to run their first big marathon or lack the confidence to make the final decision to enter the marathon, the 5km fun run or the 10km at the Soweto Marathon is exactly the thing to do. These distances give runners young and old alike, the opportunity to be a part of the Soweto Marathon experience.
The entry fee for the 5km fun run is R15 and will take place at Nasrec on Saturday, 3 November while the 10km run will take place on Sunday, 4 November with the marathon. There is no need to pre-enter for the 5km fun run, but athletes interested in the 10km have to pre-enter. Entries for the 10km race will be accepted up to 3 November at 12h00.
Pre-entries must be completed at the Soweto Marathon Race office at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, Office No. 35 Auditorium, Cnr Nasrec and Randshow Road at Nasrec, Johannesburg. The Race office can be visited from 08:30-16:30 daily.
Even Olympic Marathon runner, Rene Kalmer, started somewhere and first ran the 10km at the Soweto Marathon in 2006 before moving on to the longer distance. Kalmer finished second in the 10km that year and went on to win the Soweto Marathon in 2009.
For athletes looking to move onto the marathon in the future, Kalmer has the following words: “The support in the township is amazing and it will definitely be a memorable run.”
Prize money for the 10km race range from R5000 for the winner to R1000 for fifth position while finishing second will give you R3000. Athletes crossing the line third and fourth will get R2000 and R1500 respectively.
All athletes must collect their race numbers between 09h00 and 19h00 from either Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria on 31 October and 1 November or at the JHB Expo Centre (Nasrec) on 2 and 3 November.
