Athletics South Africa – News – NEW TRACK AND FIELD COMMISSION CHAIRPERSON

By GRR 0

At a recent council meeting held by Athletics South Africa (ASA), Pieter Lourens from Boland Athletics became the new chairperson for the Track and Field commission with 29 of the 47 cast votes.

Other candidates up for election included Magda Botha from Eastern Province Athletics, Danie Cornelius from Athletics Gauteng North and James Mokoka also from Athletics Gauteng North.

Brendon du Plessis (Schools Athletics), Moses Gericke (South Western Districts) and James Moloi from Central Gauteng were also nominated but all withdrew before voting commenced.

Lourens has been involved in sport most of his life and is currently a principal at William Lloyd Primary school in the Paarl. When asked about the contribution he’ll be making to the sport he added that he is in humble service of athletics.

As Lourens was already a member on the board, this created a gap for another additional member on the board, added to the two already vacant positions.  The three additional board members that were elected include James Mokoka (Athletics Gauteng North), Shireen Noble (Athletics South Western Districs) and James Moloi from Central Gauteng Athletics. They received 28, 27 and 24 votes respectively.

Other nominees included Godfrey Goliath from Eastern Province Athletics, Neels Matthyser from South African Sports Association for the Physically disabled, William Mokatsanyane from Schools Athletics, Pieter Steinmann from Athletics Mpumalanga and Kobus Steyn from Athletics Free State.

The provinces all had 2 votes each, 7 associates had 1 vote each, 4 commissions (1 vote per member) and the board (1 vote each). Voting took place by means of ballot.  For the additional board members, three people had to be voted for.
