WELLINGTON – Capital Classic, Incorporating the New Zealand 3000m Championship, Newtown Park – 23 January 2015
Hamish Carson and Rosa Flanagan prevailed over good fields including Commonwealth Games representatives to take out the New Zealand 3000m titles.

Flanagan soon stamped her authority in the race heading to the front straight away, leading from Nikki Hamblin who had earlier won the 800m in fine style.
Running on her own for the remainder of the distance, the 18 year old World junior championships representative continued to increase her lead over the double Glasgow Commonwealth finalist and retained her senior title in a New Zealand under 19 record of 9:07.85. This betters Sue Bruce’s record of 9:09.26 set in 1983 and was just outside Bruce’s 1984 national under 20 record of 9:05.95. Hamblin was second in 9:24.02 and Tina Harris third in 9:47.28.
The men's 3000m championship race had a quality field that included three previous winners of the race, a Commonwealth 1500 finalist, and a world junior championships fifth place getter over 10,000m.The defending title-holder Daniel Balchin led briefly before fading to sixth place.
A brave move by the 2011 champion Hamish Carson, with four laps remaining, proved decisive and he got a break in the field that he was to hold all the way to the finish, recording an excellent 7:56.19, the fastest winning time at the championships for 20 years and breaking Nick Willis' Capital Classic record. Hayden McLaren finished very strongly to hold out the 2012 champion Malcolm Hicks by 0.12s.
Quentin Rew added another New Zealand record to his growing list of achievements, winning the 3000m race walk in 11:15.20 and lowering the national record held by Commonwealth Games medallist Craig Barrett by over six seconds. Barrett’s time of 11:21.50 was set in Wanganui on 2 February 1997. Roseanne Robinson won the women’s walk in 14:13.67.
Pole vaulters relished the conditions which saw Nick Southgate clear a personal best 5.30 and become New Zealand's second highest vaulter. Not to be outdone, Eliza McCartney cleared 4.30, the third highest competition of her career. National champion Thomas North, also from the Jeremy McColl coaching stable went over 4.80, a new personal best and 0.60m above his best vault the previous season.
Sprinting honours were well spread with Kodi Harman (10.76) from Tauranga and Kelsey Berryman (11.78) from Canterbury taking the 100m events while Aucklander James Mortimer (21.70) and Hawkes Bay youngster Georgia Hulls (24.49) were the best over 200m. The 400m races went to Aucklanders Daniel Dyet (47.28) and new talent Sarah Pearce (55.64) from Megan Kikuchi 56.85 and Anne Simpson 56.91.
Commonwealth Games 800m seventh place getter Nikki Hamblin showed a clean pair of heels in the women's two-lapper, winning in 2:06.17 from junior Holly Manning 2:08.32 and Lucy Jacobs 2:09.91, before lining up shortly afterwards in the 3000m championship race. Ben Anderson 1:52.55 had a narrow victory over Jordan Rackham 1:52.83 in the 800m while Marcus Karamanolis enjoyed a win in the 1500m in 3:59.70. Alisha Gilchrist won the women’s 1500m in 4:40.00, half a second faster than Jessica Martin.
Rochelle Coster had her second victory of the season over national champion Fiona Morrison in the 100m hurdles, recording 13.41 to Morrison's 13.66. The time was a personal best by 26 year old Coster.
High Jumpers Billy Crayford and Liz Lamb won their respective events in 2.05 and 1.82, with Crayford, the seven times national champion needing the countback to beat Sam Pinson's personal best. Commonwealth discus fourth place getter Siositina Hakeai was second in the discus throw with 57.23, which was won by training partner Te Rina Keenan who threw 57.30. The hammer throw winners were Matthew Bloxham with 59.07 and Lauren Bruce with 53.57. Bruce was also third in the discus with 43.55.
It was a perfect evening for athletics, with nine meeting records set.

WANGANUI
Cooks Classic, Incorporating the New Zealand Junior 3000m Championship, Cooks Gardens – 20 January 2015
George Beamish and Gabrielle Gray were crowned New Zealand junior 3000m.
Beamish sat back in the early stages of his race and then unleashed a fast final lap to take the title in 8:34.31. Marcus Karamanolis of Wellington fought very strongly to secure second place in 8:34.94 and Canterbury's Matthew Prest held on for third in 8:39.74.
Gray and Hanna English fought out the lead in the junior women's championship event before NZ Ekiden Relay team member Gray forged ahead and ran the final two laps out in front, going on to win in 9:46.09, a personal best by over 20 seconds. English came in second in 10:01.19 and Alisha Gilchrist from Wellington was third in 10:15.63.
Stuart Farquhar and Ben Langton-Burnell faced off in the feature men's javelin. Farquhar (32) ensured that his 22 year old training partner did not get his first win by hitting a big 79.96 on his opening throw. Langton-Burnell didn't hit his best until the fourth round when he threw 73.42, just a metre below his best, while Farquhar did not improve.
Rosa Flanagan ran a fast mile at the New Zealand home of milling to comfortably win the women's feature race in 4:40.30. The 18 year old world junior champs representative was less than three seconds outside the long-standing national under 19 and 20 record of 4:37.89 set by Sue Bruce in 1983. Katherine Camp, a squad member in the 4x400m relay team at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and third in the Sylvia Potts Classic 800m three days earlier, ran a strong first ever mile race for second in 4:52.82, ahead of Emily Roughan 4:53.22.

Southland junior Jordan Rackham had a fast finish in the men's mile race after a slow opening pace to win in 4:12.45 from Ben Moynihan 4:14.59 and Joshua Baan 4:14.90. Scott Burch followed up his win in Hastings with another victory over 400m in 48.45.
Australian high jumpers repeated their victories from last Friday in Hawera over their Kiwi rivals with Chris Dodd clearing 2.17 and Nicola McDermott 1.83. There was good news for the New Zealanders however, with seven times New Zealand champion Billy Crayford clearing 2.10, his best height in almost three years. Liz Lamb, three times winner of the national women's title, cleared 1.80 in the women's competition, holding off promising 16 year old all-rounder Phoebe Edwards who cleared 1.77, a personal best by 0.02. Three times NZ double sprint champion, Joseph Millar and 15 year old Georgia Hulls were the stand-out sprinters taking the 200 victories, Hull with a PB 24.42 (-1.2) while 200m runner up Kelsey Berryman also in a PB 24.71 had earlier scored a personal best long jump of 6.04 (+1.2). Melbourne based New Zealand champion and record holder Nneka Okpala won the women's triple jump with 12.62, while Scott Thomson went 15.01 to win the men's event.
