Sydney Track Classic, Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush – 14 March 2015
Cameron French of Hamilton and Nicholas Southgate of North Harbour won their respective events at the Sydney Track Classic on Saturday.
French went under the 50 seconds barrier for the first time in winning the 400m hurdles in 49.72. This time equalled the New Zealand national record held by Michael Cochrane who was second in Sydney in 51.95. French also had the satisfaction of bettering the B performance standard of 49.75 for selection to the world championships in Beijing in August.
Southgate won the pole vault in a personal best height of 5.35m, adding five centimetres to his achievement at the Capital Classic meeting in Wellington in January.
Brad Mathas of Christchurch ran a personal best of 1:47.39 in finishing third in the 800m. This is an improvement on his 1:47.91 in Adelaide last month.
Angie Petty of Christchurch was third in the women’s 800m in 2:03.68 (first lap 60.04) heading in North Harbour Bays’ Nikki Hamblin who was fifth in 2:04.21. Hamish Carson of Wellington was third in the 3000m steeplechase in 8:58.67 and Hamilton’s Stuart Farquhar was third in the javelin with a throw of 78.73m, beating training partner Ben Langton-Burnell who was out to 72.57m for fourth.
Other placings Joshua Hawkins, fourth in the 110m hurdles in 13.99 (+1.5), Bailey Stewart sixth in the 400m in 47.85, Mariah Ririnui seventh in the long jump 6.00m (+0.1), Julian Matthews tenth in the 1500m 3:41.85.
