OBITUARY
Former New Zealand masters sprint champion and noted coach Bruce Savage died in Auckland on 24 September 2013 aged 79.
Savage, formerly of Christchurch and Timaru, was a top sprinter in his day winning Canterbury and Victorian 100 and 220 yards titles. He was also a nationally ranked weightlifter. Savage represented New Zealand at the 1981 world masters’ track and field championships in Christchurch in the 100m and 200m. He won six New Zealand masters titles; 100m M45 1981, M50 1985, M55 1989 and M60 1996 and in the 200m M50 1985 and M55 1989.
Savage was heavily involved in South Canterbury athletics and weightlifting. He established the Lovelock Athletic Club and the Timaru Weightlifting Club.

Savage was the initial coach of Dick Tayler, setting him off on his path of success and the gold medal in the 10,000m at the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games. Dick Tayler in his book ‘Golds aren’t easy’ said that for fear of burning himself out too early he approached Bruce Savage in his second year at Timaru Boys’ High School and sought his advice. Dick said that Bruce had a training theory, which ran contrary to the distance methods of Arthur Lydiard, working on the principle “strength builds speed”. To increase strength Bruce advocated a concentrated weightlifting programme. “He was convinced such a programme could develop speed and co-ordination just as well, if not better than gruelling marathon training runs,” said Tayler in his book.
“Bruce told me I was capable of record times if I applied myself to his programme. A real enthusiast, this slightly built man with rimless glasses soon had me working hard at weight training and running and I joined up as a member of the South Canterbury Athletic Club.”
In only his second season as an athlete Tayler set a world record for a 15 year old over a mile of 4:18.6.

Savage was also involved with national sprint champion in 1969 and 1970 Laurie D’Arcy who represented New Zealand at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games in the 100m and 200m and later won gold for Australia in the 4 x 100m relay at the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games.

A memorial service for Savage will be held on 26 January 2014 in Timaru. It would have been his 80th birthday on this day.
