JAPAN Ekiden Relay, Chiba – 23 November 2012
New Zealand finished a creditable sixth in the international relay staged over the marathon distance of 42.195km.

The six-person team had its highest place finish and fastest time in the seven years since the format was changed to a mixed team in 2007.

After solid runs from Nick Willis, eighth fastest on the 5km lap 1 in 14:11 and Lucy van Dalen, fourth fastest on the 5km lap two in 15:43, the Kiwis sat in sixth place.
Zane Robertson was in top form on the third stage of 10km which he cut out in 28:04, for fastest lap honours, to bring New Zealand up to second place behind Kenya. Robertson set a new lap record and equalled the New Zealand 10km road running record held by Jono Wyatt set at Chiba in 1996.
The performance later earned Robertson the MVP award for the event across all teams.

With the team holding second place, Holly van Dalen took over and ran 16:41 for eighth place on the lap, but more importantly, only allowed the Japanese team past, finishing the leg with New Zealand in third place.
New Zealand Cross Country and Road champion Malcolm Hicks ran the fifth leg of 10km, producing the fifth fastest lap, with the Russians and Japan University teams moving past the Kiwis.
Nikki McFadzien fought bravely to maintain the team's fifth placing, but the USA team squeezed past within the last kilometre.
It was a satisfying result for New Zealand, finishing just 1:44 behind the second placed Japanese team and heading off teams of the quality of Germany, Canada, Australia and France.
Daniel Balchin, the men’s back-up runner won the 5000m track race for the team reserves, recording a huge PB of 13:57.26 while Rachel Kingsford placed fifth in the women’s reserve race in 16:47.42.
Kenya led throughout finishing in a course record of 2:03:59.

Bays Athletics Night of 5’s, AUT Millennium Stadium – 23 November 2013
Aaron Pulford and Camille Buscomb won their respective races at the annual night of 5000m races at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday evening.
Pulford aiming for a sub 14 minute time recorded 14:06.18 and likewise Buscomb wanting to go under 16 minutes ran 16:02.23.
It has been over two years since Pulford last targeted a 5000m race, when he clocked 14:03.92 in Belgium.
“I really wanted to break 14 minutes by myself, I’m sick of running too slow,” said Pulford.
His immediate goal now is a fast 10,000m in the Zatopek meeting in Melbourne in just over two weeks time.
“I want to run well under 29 minutes there and hopefully get close to the B standard for the Commonwealth Games,” he added.
Buscomb, who carved 40 seconds off her previous best time, was using the race to judge how her training is progressing.
“This is my first track race of the season so after a couple of more months of track stuff I’ll be ready to really have a crack at a time,” she said.
Delhi Commonwealth Games double silver medallist Nikki Hamblin was second in 16:30.46 and Lydia O’Donnell third in 16:41.44.

NELSON
Tasman Clubs’ Championships, Saxton Field Athletics Track – 23 November 2013

Consistency, says Athletics Nelson thrower Dale Pritchard, has been the key to his early success in the 2013-14 season. That was never more evident than in his winning performances at Saturday’s Tasman Clubs Championships at the Saxton Field Athletics Track. Pritchard had three shot puts over his Tasman Centre and Athletics Club record of 16.19m. He threw 16.20 on his second attempt and then followed with two more heaves of 16.22m.
“I used to have one good throw and that was it,’’ said Pritchard, who also won the senior men’s discus in a near Tasman record 48.57m. “But now I am having several good throws, and that will help me to keep me throwing farther and farther.”
Kai Mason threw close to his bests in the winning M18 shot put (14.15m), discus (38.20m), and javelin (44.11m). Chris Brake won in his two jumps – 1.90m in the high jump and 6.56m (+1.0) in the long jump.
Katie Thompson had five of her six long jumps over five metres with her best at 5.25m (+0.5). She also dominated the 100m with her 12.72 clocking, but the wind at +2.1 was a scant over the allowable legal wind. Andrew Kennedy won the senior men’s 100m in 11.27 (+1.6) and later won the 400m in 52.46, and Matthew Keeley won the M18 100m (12.05 +1.6) and 200m (24.40 0.0). Amanda Fitisemanu upended a stacked W18 400m field with 60.00.
Kelsey Barrett came from behind and nipped Hannah Sheperd in the women’s top heat of the 200m in 27.99 (+0.9) and finished second in the 400 in 62.51. Tayler Boeyen won the W18 80m hurdles in 13.44 and the discus with 28.22m.
Athletics Nelson runners Jess Martin and Mike Lowe proved fit as they head to the schools’ championships in Hamilton. Martin led wire-to-wire in winning the women’s 1500m in 4:43.13. Lowe followed Thomas Andersen for 600m of the men’s 1500m before pulling away to a personal best of 4:01.96.
