CHRISTCHURCH – International Track Meeting, Christ’s College – 2 February 2013
Tom Walsh moved into the number two spot ahead of Les Mills in the New Zealand shot put all time rankings with his winning performance over Australian junior record holder Damien Birkenhead.
Walsh had the shot out to 19.83m a 50cm improvement on his previous best set in France last June and three centimetres further than Mills threw in Honolulu in July 1967. Birkenhead was second with 17.56m, with Dale Pritchard from Nelson third with 14.75m. Birkenhead won the 2kg discus throwing 45.83m with Hayden Hall second 44.56m.
Walsh was 77cm short of the A performance standard for selection to the world championships in Moscow in August.

The New Zealand champion for the last three years, who turns 21 on the first of March said that the crowd of 3000 was a huge help in getting him fired up and throwing well.

Nick Willis won the mile on the grass track in 4m 8.16s, beating Hugo Beamish 4m 12.61s, Alex Parlane 4m 15.99s and Ben Moynihan 4m 16.70s.

Willis was pleased with his performance and now looks forward to another mile on Auckland’s North Shore on Thursday 28 February where he will have an attempt on Sir John Walker’s New Zealand allcomers and resident record of 3m 50.6s set in Auckland 32 years ago.
Sam Petty from UK just headed in Brad Mathas in the 800m in 1m 54.65s. Susan Kuijken of the Netherlands won the Brian Taylor Memorial women’s 3000m in 9m 11.59s from Lucy Van Dalen 9m 12.76s, Rosa Flanagan 9m 37.66s, Rachel Kingsford 9m 45.73s and Nicki McFadzien 9m 53.40s.
Joseph Millar won the 100m in 11.22s (-3.0) while Alex Jordon took out the 300m in 34.13s.
Scott McLaren won the novel tetrathlon with a score of 2813, achieved from 100m in 11.55s (-4.3), long jump 5.87m (-2.2), shot put 14.41m and 800m 2m 7.58s. Stephen Cain of Australia was second with 2750 and Jesse Bryant third 2742.

Black sticks hockey representative Anita Punt dominated the sprints, winning the 100m in a photo finish with Kelsey Berryman both clocking 12.61s (-2.9) and the 300m in 39.60s ahead of Zoe Ballantyne 40.77s. Zoe Buckman of Australia won the 800m in 2m 10.29s, Ariana Harper was second in 2m 13.27s and Pippa Trevella third in 2m 14.63s. Portia Bing won the women’s triathlon by one point over Brooke Stratton of Australia. Bing’s performances were 100m 12.79s (-3.0), long jump 5.76m (-0.2) and shot put 10.40m, compared to Stratton’s 12.76s, 5.97m and 9.34m. Sarah Cowley who was the best in the shot put with 11.90m was third scoring 2110 points.

Pascal Kethers equalled his personal best clearing 4.80m and American Megan Jamerson won the women’s competition with 4.00m.

AUCKLAND
Auckland Centre Meeting, Douglas Track and Field, Waitakere – 2 February 2013

Isaac Tatoa claimed the 60m in 6.87s (+1.8) and the 100m in 10.92s (+2.2) but had to bow to Ben Potter in the 200m which Potter won in 21.80s (+4.0). Michael Vercoe-Curtis led throughout the 800m in 1m 55.48s, with James Watt closing in fast for second in 1m 55.76s. Jono Jackson with an explosive final lap won the 3000m in 8m 51.81s. The women’s 3000m went to Georgie Grgec in 10m 1.38s. Megan Kikuchi (16) set a personal best 200m of 25.62s (+0.2), while Paige Harwood was out to 5.50m (+1.0) in the long jump. Lucy Jacobs who competed at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney last month recorded 2m 14.64s over 800m. Siositina Hakeai threw a reasonable 53.29m considering the unfavourable wind conditions for the end of the ground she was throwing from.

Throwers Meeting with New Caledonian athletes, AUT Millennium Stadium – 29/30 January 2013

Most noticeable performances were: Discus: PBs by Matthew Bloxham 52.20m (1.5) and Alex Parkinson 47.85m (1.75), 54.27m by Siositina Hakeai.
Shot put: 17.09m by Matthew Bloxham and 16.69m for NCL Damien Tafilagi (5kg)
Hammer: PB 40.48m for Anthony Nobilo (4kg). Adam Miller 53.60m 1cm ahead of Matthew Bloxham 53.59m (7.26kg).
Javelin: PB 42.65m by Madeleine Chapman (NZL season 2nd best performance).

TAURANGA
Waikato Bay of Plenty Meeting, Tauranga Domain – 2 February 2013

Mariah Ririnui went under 12 seconds for 100m for the first time, winning the 100m in 11.96s from Kristie Baillie 12.08s and Abby Goldie 12.22s. Unfortunately the wind gauge failed to operate. Ririnui also won the long jump with 5.72m (+0.6). Jonty Rae recorded 22.45s over 200m and 49.08s in the 400m both PBs. Other personal bests were set by Tarryn Davey in the U/18 400m in 58.22s and Amy Robinson in the U/18 300m hurdles in 44.28s. Robinson, aged 16 has 15 days before her 17th birthday to better the national W16 record of 43.87s set by Sonia Scown (now Sonia Waddell) in 1988.
Michael Goldie won the under 20 100m in 11.12s, Michael Cochrane the SM 400m hurdles in 51.45s and Regan Standing was over the high jump at 2.05m.

Centre Meeting, Newtown Park Stadium – 2 February 2013

Courtney Wheeler U/18 100m 12.87s (+2.7) and 200m 26.80s (+2.7). Andrew Kennedy 100m in 10.94s (+2.7). Saravee Sos 200m 22.88s (-0.1). Kieron McDonald 800m in 1m 56.57s from Evan Cooper 1m 56.93s. 65th  Kagawa Marugame International Half Marathon
– 3 February: Kimberley Smith finished second in 1h 9m 0s, just seven seconds behind winner for the last two years London Olympic marathon gold medallist Tiki Gelena of Ethiopia. Collis Birmingham won the event in an Australian national record of 1h 00m 56s.
