Athletics Australia – News – Weightman wins Medibank Marathon in Melbourne
Lisa Weightman (Vic) is the toast of her hometown Melbourne this morning after clocking a new personal best of 2:26:05 to win the women’s 42.195km event at the Medibank Marathon.
Improving the race record by more than six minutes and eclipsing the previous fastest time by an Australian on home soil held by distance running legend Kerryn McCann, the time is also a Commonwealth Games A-Qualifier to ensure that Weightman has staked her claim for selection to defend her bronze medal from Delhi in 2010.
Dominic Ondoro (KEN) won the men's race in 2:10:27, with Liam Adams (Vic) the first Australian over the line in sixth in a time of 2:14:09.
A six-time representative at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships for Australia, Adams’ crack at the longest road running event on the championship athletics schedule was his first and the time falls well below the Commonwealth Games A-Qualifier required for Glasgow 2014.
Adams was followed over the finish line shortly thereafter by Scott Westcott (NSW). Westcott crossed in 2:14:21, also a Commonwealth Games A-Qualifier.
In other results, Steve Moneghetti (Vic) crossed 4th overall behind IAAF World Cross Country representative Mitchel Brown (Vic) in the men’s 10km event. His time was a world record for his age group the road race.
