Athletics Australia – News – U17 SQUAD: 74 athletes added ahead of camp at AIS

Athletics Australia is thrilled to today announce a 74-strong Under 17 Development Squad.

The first step in Athletics Australia’s National Development Pathway, the Under 17 Development Squad comprises those athletes considered prospects for future selection to the IAAF world youth championships, the IAAF world junior championships and the National Under 19 Talent Squad.

Launched in 2006, the squad is chosen through consultation with Athletics Australia’s National Youth Event Coaches, and this year again welcomes two athletes with a disability to ensure Athletics Australia’s collaborative approach to athlete development with the Paralympic Preparation Program.

Additionally, the program in 2012 has expanded its selection criteria to ensure better interaction between athlete, coach and Athletics Australia.  The development of long-term training programs for each athlete ahead of the program’s commencement will see National Youth Event Coaches engaging with personal coaches to assist in an athlete’s development from the outset.

Sara Mulkearns, Athletics Australia Junior High Performance Manager, said: “Again we welcome a bumper group of athletes and coaches to the U17 Squad and we look forward to working with them all.

“Our first interaction as a squad will be at a camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in just shy of two weeks, with athletes and personal coaches engaging with National Youth Event Coaches to begin work on developing our next breed of talent.

“Excitingly, Athletics Australia’s coaching department will be hosting a two-day workshop in conjunction with our own camp activities to value add and support the personal coaches who work tirelessly with the selected athletes.

Athletics Australia congratulates all athletes selected and look forward to welcoming them all at the Australian Institute of Sport next weekend.
