Athletics Australia – News – Pearson second in Brussels
Sally Pearson has finished second in the women’s 100m hurdles at the IAAF Diamond League meet in Brussels overnight.
The Queenslander ran 12.63 (wind +1.0) to finish second behind Dawn Harper-Nelson of the US, who ran a season’s best time of 12.48.
In the women’s 1500m fellow Australian Zoe Buckman (ACT) failed to finish after a spectacular fall with just over a lap to go.
The large field of 17 meant a spill was always a possibility and Buckman was brought down when a group of athletes fell in front of her. She stepped off the track shortly after the fall. Abeba Aregawi of Sweden eventually won the race in 4:05.41.
The men’s 5000m featured two Australians with Ben St Lawrence (NSW) and Collis Birmingham (Vic.) both on the start list. Both Australians remained in the leading pack through the first half of the race but ultimately fell off the pace.
St Lawrence finished in 12th place in a time of 13:23.87, while Birmingham came 16th in 13:44.27. Yenew Alamirew of Ethiopia won the race in 12:58.75.
