Athletics Australia – News – Hale stars again
Exciting 16-year-old Tasmanian athlete Jack Hale has capped off an incredible week at the Domain Athletics Centre in Hobart by leaping 7.66m in the long jump at an interclub meet on Saturday.
The jump broke the Tasmanian Under 17 through to Under 20 state records. It also ranks him number one in the world for long jumpers born in 1998, and is second only to Russia’s Anatoliy Ryapolov on the IAAF youth rankings for the discipline.
The effort also places him at number three on the Tasmanian all-time list for all age groups in the men’s long jump.
“I am over the moon with it [the long jump] but my technique was all over the place so I believe if I work on the landing I will have 7.80 in the very near future,” he said.
Hale gained national media attention last week after breaking the Tasmanian Open and Australian under 18 100m records at a school carnival after clocking an astonishing 10.44 seconds.
The teen caused more excitement with his run in the final leg of a 4x100m in the same carnival, making up a massive deficit to storm home to victory.
Hale backed up with an impressive time of 10.59 seconds to take out Saturday’s 100m event ahead of Jacob Despard who finished second in the time 10.96.
