Athletics Australia – News – Donetsk here we come for 2013 World Youth Champs – AUSTRALIAN ATHLETIC RESULTS No27 2012

By GRR 0

The selection policy for the 2013 IAAF world youth championships in Donetsk (UKR) has today been announced by Athletics Australia, with the full version available for download by clicking here.

The eighth instalment of the biennial event, the 2013 IAAF world youth championships to be held on July 10-14 will see Donetsk host their first major athletics event since the 1977 European Athletics Junior Championships.

Sara Mulkearns, Athletics Australia Junior High Performance Manager, said: “October 1 marked the beginning of the IAAF qualification period so we are thrilled that we can issue our policy in such quick succession to that of the international body.

“The selection philosophy in 2013 is the same as it has been in recent years for world youths. Athletes will be expected to achieve a qualifying performance on at least two occasions, with these qualifiers reflecting the average top-eight performance at the past four championships and all under 18 events at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships will again act as the selection trial.”

Please note that the implement weight for the women’s shot put, hammer throw and javelin have changed to 3 kilograms, 3 kilograms and 500 grams respectively. These implement weights will also apply in the shot put and javelin for the girl’s heptathlon. Additionally, there is no decathlon, with boys competing across eight events in an octathlon instead.

Athletes eligible for selection must be born in either 1996 or 1997, and must register their interest in selection by completing the online nomination form by clicking here.

Donetsk is a large city in eastern Ukraine that since its humble beginnings as a coal-mining town in the middle of the 19th century has become home to more than 1.5 million people. It is also the home of men’s pole vault world record holder Sergey Bubka and European Athletics Championships medallists Olga Saladuha and Maksym Mazuryk.

Since their inception in 1999 the championships have proven a breeding ground for talent, with Jana Pittman (Poland, 1999), Jared Tallent (Hungary, 2001), Sally Pearson (Canada, 2003), Dani Samuels (Morocco, 2005) just some of the names to have competed at earlier editions of the meet before going on to Olympic or world championships success.

Past Australian gold medallists at the championships have included Pittman (400m hurdles – 1999), Georgie Clarke (800m – 1999, 1500m – 2001), Pearson (100m hurdles – 2001), Kimberley Mickle (javelin throw – 2001), Jake Stein (octathlon – 2011) and Samuels (discus throw – 2005).

The qualification period closes on 17 March 2013, the last day of the 2013 Australian Junior Athletics Championships.
