Athletics Australia – News – Deakes, Hooker on Athletes Commission

Legendary Australian pole vaulter Steve Hooker and former world champion walker Nathan Deakes have been named as members of the ten-person Athletics Australia’s Athletes Commission through until 2016.
 
The Commission is filled by members nominated by the athletes, and will be chaired by Deakes. 
 
Deakes and Hooker will join decathlete Steve Cain, 400m hurdler Tristan Thomas, pole vaulter Alana Boyd, sprinter Caitlin Pincott, para-athlete Richard Nicholson and sprinter Matt Lynch.
 
Incumbent members Kylie Wheeler and Madeleine Hogan have retained their positions on the Athletes Commission.
 
“The Commission was set up by Athletics Australia to be a vehicle to provide assistance on athlete related issues; whether that be to provide advice or take a broader issue to the Executive,” said Deakes.  “The Commission exists to support the athletes, our sport's most valuable asset. Our job primarily is to provide availability and support.
 
“We are really happy with the experience and skills that each of our members brings to the Commission. We've tried to create a group which is non-intimidating for athletes to approach with diverse personalities, event group representation, and geographical location.
 
“Steve Hooker is also a conduit between our Commission and the Australian Olympic Committee’s Athlete Commission as well.

It is also the first time that we have two para-athletes on the Commission, which is a positive.
 
Athletics Australia recognises the contribution of the out-going members of the Commission and thanks former Chair Lisa Weightman as well as Clinton Hill, Justin Anlezark, Luke Adams and Tamsyn Manou (Lewis) for their contributions.
