Accredited Athletics Coaches are offered the opportunity to learn from one of the world’s best in Derek Evely next month, as Athletics Australia and the Australian Institute of Sport welcome the renowned international coach in Melbourne on 2-3 November.

Set to present a two-day coaching workshop, Evely will on the first day focus on the key elements of throws coaching before shifting his attention to Periodisation & Planning for all events on the Sunday.

“This is a very exciting opportunity for Accredited Athletics Coaches and we thank the Australian Institute of Sport for seeing value in our innovation funding application as part of Australia’s Winning Edge,” Jill Taylor, Athletics Australia’s National Coaching Development Manager, said.

“Derek Evely is a name that is synonymous with athletics coaching, and the wealth of knowledge he will be able to introduce to Australia’s already talented coaching community will prove invaluable.

“His extensive understanding on Periodisation & Planning for elite athletes is amazing and that will be especially relevant for Australian coaches who regularly have to prepare athletes to peak on multiple occasions in a calendar year.”

Evely has been coach to a number of successful elite athletes including Dylan Armstrong (World Championships and Olympic medallist – shot put), Sophie Hitchon (world under 18 and under 20 champion, Olympic finalist), Gary Reed (World Championships medallist – 800m) and Shane Niemi (Commonwealth Games medallist – 400m).

Among other roles, Evely has been the UK Athletics Performance Centre Director and Sport Science Manager at the Canadian Athletics Coaching Centre (CACC).

Evely has extensive knowledge on Periodisation & Planning, and is one of the world’s leading experts of the unique system of legendary coach and methodologist Anatoliy Bonbdarchuk.

This conference is funded by Australia’s Winning Edge initiative and therefore there will be no cost for coaches accredited with Athletics Australia (Accredited Athletics Coaches) to attend (all travel and accommodation costs to, from and within Melbourne are at the individual’s expense). Athletes are encouraged to attend, but only in the company of an Accredited Athletics Coach.

If you are planning on attending this conference please register your interest with Kylie Italiano via email at kylie.italiano@athletics.org.au
