Athletics Australia – News – ALL SCHOOLS

By GRR 0

Conor Warren (Qld) has perfectly closed out his high school athletics career, with the 17-year-old improving the national under 18 javelin record to win gold at the Australian All Schools Championships.

A finalist at the IAAF World Youth Championships earlier this year, Warren opened his series with 67.88m before his record-breaking performance of 77.80m in the second round saw him take an unrivalled lead. He chose to sit out the final two rounds, as Jack Stanton (WA, 62.98m) won silver and Brandon Stanaway (Qld, 62.62m) bronze.

Warren will now turn his attention to qualification for the IAAF World Junior Championships next year, as well as the Athletics Australia Under 19 Talent Squad camp in January, where he will join fellow throwers for a week-long training block in Melbourne (Vic).

Ellie Bowyer (Qld) joined Warren on the list of record breakers, with her 49.68m throw in the girl’s under 16 javelin throw also the best ever by an Australian.

Opening her account with 46.31m throw, the 15-year-old followed up with her winning mark in round two, 40.57m in the third round and 44.29m to close. The silver medal was won by Alexandra Roberts (Qld) with a mark of 47.20m.

Equally impressive were Samantha Peace (NSW) and Samantha Lenton (Qld) in the girl’s under 18 discus throw late yesterday afternoon.

Competing in the girl’s under 18 discus throw late in the program on day two yesterday, Peace, who won bronze at the IAAF World Youth Championships earlier this year, threw 48.52m to win gold and stake her claim for selection. Lenton hit a best mark of 48.32m to win silver as Bianca Hansen (Vic, 46.62m) won bronze.

In other results on day three of the Australian All Schools Championships:

–          Ned Weatherly (Vic) won a second gold medal in as many days with a throw of 18.90m in the boy’s shot put. The result sits alongside his 80.32m personal best effort to take victory in the hammer throw yesterday.

–          Lily Harding-Delooze (NSW) crossed the line in 2:10.05 to win girl’s under 18 800m gold ahead of her identical twin sister Amy Harding-Delooze (NSW, second, 2:10.28). The bronze medal was won by Maddison Caulfield (Vic, 2:12.06).

–          Competing in a wheelchair, Julie Charlton (NSW) won her third medal at the Australian All Schools Championships. Clocking 22.50, she won bronze in the girl’s under 18 para-athletics 100m.

–          Sailing over 2.12m, John Dodds (Qld) won the boy’s under 18 high jump from Grant Szalek (WA, second, 2.12m) and Joseph Baldwin (Vic, third, 2.09m).

–          Clocking 5:52.24, Luke Graves (WA) ran a meet record to win the boy’s under 18 2000m steeplechase gold medal from Edward Trippas (NSW, second, 5:55.16) and Sam King (WA, third, 5:59.29).
