Athens Classic Marathon set for 11 November – European Athletics (EAA) – News

The 2012 Athens Classic Marathon is scheduled for Sunday 11 November. The sixth annual AIMS Marathon Symposium will be staged in the town of Marathon on the eve of the race.

The subject of this year’s symposium will be ‘Levels and Quality Control of a Marathon event’. Principal speakers will be the AIMS board members, Mark Milde (Berlin Marathon), Gary Boshoff (Comrades’ Marathon), and Fernando Jamarme (Santiago Marathon).

More than 50 organisers of international marathon races are expected to be in Athens for the AIMS Symposium. Since 2012 is the 30th anniversary of both the re-launch of the Athens Classic Marathon, and of the AIMS organisation itself, there will be a Gala dinner, in Athens, on 10 November.

Legendary marathon athletes and other marathon and athletics figureheads will be honoured by AIMS & the Hellenic federation, SEGAS, during this special event.

In Budapest, Attila Zsivoczky competed as a guest, scoring 7703 points, in the decathlon during the Hungarian U23 and U18 Combined Events Championships on Sunday.

Norwegian hammer record holder Eivind Henriksen scored 4427 points for a Norwegian best in the throwing pentathlon with 71.58 hammer, 14.00 shot, 50.14 discus, 54.96 javelin and 21.77 weight throw.

The 4th Bratislava Night Run, a road race over 9 km had new participation record of 3,535 runners. The men’s winner was triathlon Olympian Richard Varga in 27:33 and for the women Lucia Janeckova, 32:28, ahead of marathon Olympian Katarina Beresova 32:34.

The Nordic walking championships in Eskiltuna on Saturday saw Norway´s Erik Tysse winning the 20km race in 1:20:39 ahead of Ato Ibanez of Sweden 1:22:36PB and Andreas Gustafsson another lifetime best 1:23:20. Lithuanian Brigita Virbalyte won the women’s 10 km in 45:16 ahead of Latvian Agnese Pastare 47:49.

The Russian Walking Grand Prix ended with a final meet in Voronovo September 16 won by Mikhail Ryzhov in 39:11 ahead of Andrey Bartsaykin 39:31 and Pyotr Bogatyryov 39:33. Tatyana Korotkova was the best woman in 43:24 beating Marina Pandakova 43:29 and Anna Yermina who was also the best junior in 43:35. The best junior male Kirill Florov achieved 41:09.
