Paul Kipkemei Kogo mastered the heat of up to 29 degrees Celsius and won the 31st edition of the Stockholm Marathon by the largest margin ever, seven minutes.
It's the fourth consecutive year that the runners have to cope with temperatures. Kogo was followed by his compatriots Abraham Keter, Bejamin Serem and Willy Kirui during the first lap that ended in 1:07.22.
The reigning champion Kirui was the first victim of Kogo's pace. He left the course after 30 kilometers, hit by severe dehydration. Serem lost five minutes during the last seven kilometers while Keter didn't finish the race.
Isabellah Andersson repeated her feat of last year and run the race with negative splits, the second half faster than the first one. The Swedish record holder Lena Gavelin lost her momentum and was also beaten by seven minutes.
The record number of 13,718 runners finished the race in spite of the tough conditions.

At this year’s Stockholm Marathon, we are introducing Speed on Map – a program which lets you see in graphics how you ran the race and also how others ran.
Speed on Map is a new program which was developed by Martin Käck. He
created it using Microsoft Silverlight, a program which is installed and
runs in the webbrowser
Once you have installed Silverlight you can start to use Speed on Map.
– The idea is to graphically show the results, Martin says.
There are several different views in Speed on Map:
how they ran.
colour becomes redder
Results for 2009 Stockholm Marathon will be available on Speed on Map from 18:00 on Sunday evening.
