A look back on 2025 – the European Athletics Indoor Championships – UK Athletics
The European Athletics Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn marked the first major championships of 2025 for the Novuna Great Britain and Northern Ireland team, and provided an early opportunity to assess form and championship readiness across the programme.
Across four days of competition, GB & NI finished eighth in the medal table, securing seven medals – one gold, three silver and three bronze – alongside a number of finalists and notable moments that shaped the early indoor season.
The championships were defined by an outstanding sprint performance from Jeremiah Azu, who delivered one of the standout moments of the meet by winning men’s 60m gold. Fastest through the rounds, Azu produced a commanding final to claim the European title in a personal best and European-leading 6.49, becoming the first British men’s champion in the event since 2017. The race also brought further success for GB & NI, with Andrew Robertson securing bronze, adding his first senior international medal after a long international career.
Middle-distance events proved a consistent source of success for the British team. George Mills produced a bold, front-running performance in the men’s 3000m final to claim silver, while in the women’s 3000m Melissa Courtney-Bryant also secured silver, narrowly missing gold after committing to an aggressive race plan.
There was further middle-distance success in the women’s 1500m, where Revee Walcott-Nolan claimed a memorable bronze medal, her first major international podium, following a disciplined race and decisive finish in a tightly contested final.
Relay performances bookended GB & NI’s championships. The opening day saw the team claim bronze in the inaugural mixed 4x400m relay, while the final track event saw the women’s 4x400m team of Lina Nielsen, Hannah Kelly, Emily Newnham and Amber Anning secure silver in a British record 3:24.89.
Away from the podium, the championships also included a number of notable finalist performances. Amy Hunt reached the women’s 60m final, finishing sixth after producing personal bests through the rounds, while Morgan Lake placed fifth in the women’s high jump final after a technically demanding competition. Scott Lincoln finished fourth in the men’s shot put, missing out on a medal by the narrowest of margins, and in the combined events Jade O’Dowda finished fourth in the women’s pentathlon with a personal best total.
As the first major championships outing of the year, Apeldoorn provided a clear reference point for the Novuna GB & NI team’s indoor season, with medals secured across sprints, middle distance and relays, alongside several near-podium finishes.
