90th KOSICE Marathon 2013 – Makau the star guest, record number of entries
KOSICE (SVK): Kenyan star Patrick Makau who just witnessed on Sunday in Berlin how his marathon world record was broken will be guest star at another marathon this Sunday. As ambassador he will witness the oldest marathon in Europe, the 90th edition of Int ernational Peace Marathon in Kosice, Slovakia.
The event is booming coming close to 9500 record number of entries for all races (from 53
countries), the nearly 2000 from it for marathon would be new record for Slovakia. Top male names were announced. Kenyan Philemon Baaru who improved in Kosice last year to 2:07:49 is returning also this year.
From other Kenyans to note Peter Kurui with 2:08:56 best and Patrick Korir who improved in Rome this year to 2:11:32 and is former winner from Madrid and Toulouse. Interesting to see Andrew Kiprop in his European marathon debut after winning Yingkou in China 2012 in 2:13:18.
From Ethiopians to note Gezahegn Abebe who improved in spring in Paris to 2:09:57. The base prize money for men winner is 9000 E, that will be increased to 12 000 if sub 2:09, to 15000 for sub 2:08 and 20 000 for sub 2:07. On the women side the base is 6000 E for win, if sub 2:30 it will be 8000, for sub 2:28 10 000 and for sub 2:26 the prize will be 15000.
Last year course records were broken in Kosice by Lawrence Kimayio to 2:07:01 and Hellen
Mugo to 2:29:59 (she is returning also this year).
