The 30th Islandsbanki Reykjavik Marathon took place on Saturday August 24th 2013. The number of registered participants has never been higher with 14,272 runners in six distances, including 997 in the marathon and 2,356 in the half marathon. A new record was also set in the

The 30th Islandsbanki Reykjavik Marathon took place on Saturday August 24th 2013. The number of registered participants has never been higher with 14,272 runners in six distances, including 997 in the marathon and 2,356 in the half marathon.
A new record was also set in the number of runners coming from abroad. A total of 2,175 international runners from 69 countries registered for the race.
Although there was a little rain on race day, the event was a big success. The President of Iceland, Mr Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, started off the marathon and half marathon runners, and the Mayor of Reykjavik, Mr Jón Gnarr, started off the 10 k runners.
Locals gathered in the streets to support the runners while celebrating the annual Reykjavik Culture Night taking place at the same time. After the race, runners had the opportunity to take part in Culture Night celebrations all over town.
James Buis (GBR) won the marathon when he crossed the finish line in 2:33:49. Melanie Staley (GBR) was the female winner in the marathon distance and her time was 2:55:14. Kári Steinn Karlsson (ISL) and Helen Ólafsdóttir (ISL) were the half marathon winners. Kári’s time was 1:07:40 and Helen’s time was 1:22:57. Kevin Rojas Anderson (GBR) was the male winner in the 10 km run, his time being 31:50.
Arndís Ýr Hafþórsdóttir (ISL) was the female winner in 38:37.
The team Sveittir og Þreyttir (Sweaty and Tired) won the marathon relay race for the second time in a row. Their time was 3:02:48.
The 31st Islandsbanki Reykjavik Marathon will take place on Saturday August 23rd 2014.
Registration starts in January at the race website www.marathon.is/reykjavik-marathon.
