25th anniversary in Omsk/RUS – 25 years of Siberian International Marathon (SIM) on sunday 21, 2014
Siberian international marathon (SIM) is an official competition included in Russian and international calendar. SIM is a large sport and cultural event of international level that is very significant in the social life of Omsk region.
For more than 24-year-old history SIM has won reputation of constantly developing project that always has high level of organization, broad covering and attracts thousands of competitors and many thousands of spectators.
Nowadays Siberian international marathon is:
- Among three Russia’s largest marathons according to the number of athletes finished the distance of 42 km 195 m;
- Most popular sport event of the region: in 2010 there were 15,378 fans of running from 17 foreign countries and 37 regions of the Russian Federation;
- Largest prize fund among the country’s marathons;
- Strongest athletes from Russia and foreign countries compete in official race on classical marathon distance of 42 km 195 m;
- More than 250 thousand of amateurs of running from 51 countries of the world for marathon’s 20-year-old history;
- The only Russian marathon that is broadcast live;
- More than 300 thousand of spectators and fans follow sporting battles.
Siberian international marathon records
The course record among women belongs to the world-class athlete Albina Ivanova (Cheboksary, Russia), who won SIM-2002 with a time of 2:30.21.
The course record among men belongs to the world-class athlete Edward Toukhbatullin (Ufa, Russia), who won SIM-1993 with a time of 2:13.02.
Interesting facts from Siberian international marathon history
In 1992 SIM organizers introduced a distance of 21,1 km especially for the honoured guest – the New York City Marathon race director Fred Lebow. Mr. Lebow ran about 70 marathons but in Omsk he wished to run half marathon. After finishing Mr. Lebow said Omsk organizers had done much more for two years of SIM than Americans for six years.
In 1996 a German athlete Burhard van der Wadebrink went by motorbike with the SIM symbol on it from Berlin to Omsk to take part in the race.
In 1999 Yavus Sup from Turkey accompanied by his friend Osman Tekin did on crutches 42 km 195 m of the Omsk course. He did it for 8 hours 15 minutes.
In 2001 a participant from Nizhny Novgorod region ran the marathon carrying a 25-kilo sack with sugar on his shoulders. His result is 5 hours. In the same year Olga Levakova, a wheelchair athlete from Ukraine, came to Omsk to take part in the SIM. She came here without a penny making transfers from one electric train to another.
In 2010 for the first time in the Siberian international marathon history the Marathon Flame, the symbol of marathon movement, was delivered to Omsk from Greece to mark the 2500-year Anniversary of the first legendary marathon race. August, 7 on the Cathedral Square it was lit on the special ceremony and after that famous Omsk athletes carried the flame along the whole SIM course.

Age of participants is determined in the race day on 21, September, 2014. Every amateur of running is allowed to compete only in one event of the sporting program.

The MYLAPS sports timing electronic system is used to register results of participants taking part in official competitions. To use personal electronic chip is obligatory. No chip – no result!

The course of Siberian International Marathon is certified by AIMS and satisfies all international standards (international certificate of a class "A"). It makes circuit and goes on quite even transport-free city roads with qualitative road carpet.
