2013 Great Ethiopian Run – Three weeks to go!
This year's New York City Marathon in which Tsegaye Kebede won his first World Marathon Majors overall title by finishing the race in 2nd place comes as a reminder that if you're signed up for the Great Ethiopian Run 10km on 24 November then you're part of a growing global trend to run for fitness, for fun and for a good cause.
Twelve years ago Ethiopian marathoner Tesfaye Jifar won the New York race in 2 hours 7 minutes and 44 seconds, which was then a course record, and just over 23,500 runners finished the race. Three weeks later the first Great Ethiopian Run 10km took place in Addis Ababa with around 10,000 finishers and Haile Gebrselassie was crowned the race's first champion.
How times have changed! Great Ethiopian Run participation is now up to 37,000 and the New York Marathon figure is up to around 45,000! As in New York, here in Addis Ababa some of that increase in participation has come from the rise in tourists coming to the race, which is sure to increase even more following the staging of the first Haile Gebrselassie Marathon in Hawassa just two weeks ago.
So don't delay! Stay with your training for a few more weeks, and look forward to another great day out on the streets on Addis on Sunday 24th November.
Head to the gym this week and aim to make this year your best ever yet!
