* Charities new for the 2013 Boston Marathon are designated by an asterisk.

1552 participants in the 2013 Boston Marathon will become members of teams formed by these charitable organizations.  All charities which are included in the B.A.A.'s Official Charity Program for the Boston Marathon are reviewed annually by a committee formed by the B.A.A.  Also, the committee selects several new participating organizations each year through an application and interview process which occurs during the summer.

In 2012, 1492 participants in the Boston Marathon, representing B.A.A. charities, raised more than $11.4 million.  The B.A.A.'s principal sponsor for the Boston Marathon for 28 consecutive years, John Hancock Financial, also has a non-profit bib program whereby entries into the race are designated for charitable non-profit organizations.  In total last year, the two programs raised more than $18.2 million.

The year 2013 will mark the 25th year for the B.A.A.'s Official Charity Program for the Boston Marathon.  The American Liver Foundation was the first, formal organization to raise funds at the Boston Marathon in 1989.  Dana-Farber Cancer Institute was added by the B.A.A. in 1990.

Over the past 27 years, the official B.A.A. Charity program and John Hancock's own Non-Profit Program have combined to raise more than $150 million for community based organizations.

The B.A.A. assists organizations chosen as part of its Official Charity Program for the Boston Marathon by providing a limited number of entries, offering seminars for charity leaders, inviting runners for charity to attend its complimentary clinic series, sharing information on effective fundraising techniques, and supporting the organizations with promotion, and public and media relations.
